That impacted wisdom tooth might cause you some trouble. My bottom two were impacted, not severely, but impacted enough that it took some considerable oomph on the docs part to get em out.

Before the operation, I got a valium drip in my left arm, then they gassed me. I tell ya, thats a wonderful feeling, flying away into the warm embrace of lala land.

Before I knew it, I woke up in the recovery room, mouth full of cotton, and quite disoriented. However, I came to grips pretty quickly, and walked out on my own.

The operation itself took all of 15 or so minutes of the doctor kneeling on my chest (im a pretty big guy) cutting and wrenching (albeit not as barbaric as it sounds) until one by one my teeth came loose.

As mentioned before, you have to worry about dry sockets. If any of the blood clots that form inside the sockets are washed away, then you will be in pain. The blood clots protect the socket from any outside interferece, like a scab would on your arm. Normally the doc will stitch the socket shut, so the clot will have an extra layer of protection. However, if they aren't stitched, then you have to take extreme care not to disturb the sockets or risk developing dry socket.
Remember, dry socket = exposed raw nerves, which = owwie!

You might have some swelling or bruising of the jaw, depending on how hard the doc had to crank the brace to get to the back of your mouth. So expect some soreness, of course. The doc might give you a perscription for pain medication if you really need it, but that of course depends on how the surgery goes.

Good luck, the doc should fill you in on everything about aftercare.

QUOTE (MR.JEBURTO @ Mar 20 2004, 08:09 AM)

wow you americans get gas.

in the UK all you get is an injection in your gum (which hurts like ****) making your gum go num and then they just rip the tooth out. the worst part is that you can fell the tendons (or what ever they are), that hold your tetth in snap, and the gum attached to the teeth slowly tears away. and then because of the injection you cant talk for the rest of the day and when you wake up the next day it feels like someone has come in at night and repeatedly kicked you in the mouth.

good luck for you any way.

The injection doesn't hurt at all! It just feels like a scratch and then seconds later your gums are numb.

I had to have a rotten molar taken out 4 years ago (blame poor teethcare, I've mended my ways now) and even though the dentist had to even put his foot on the chair whilel wrenching with dental pliers, it was more discomfort than real pain. The actual pain came later when sitting at home, and man alive it went on for hours at a time
Plus, when I ate food became trapped in the hole left behind, so I found myself constantly fishing it out with toothpicks.

The most pain ever at the dentists was suprisingly from a filling, as the dentist had to stray too close to the nerve for comfort. I'd prefer not to repeat that agony again

Only a few words of advice:
Pig out on the day before, because you'll be eating soup for days after.

    I live!

There was some minor confusion at first (the plans were to remove both upper and lower left wisdom teeth... except it turns out that the previous dentist had filed the wrong papers, and I didn't actually HAVE a lower left wisdom tooth. Didn't find out till AFTER the dentist had done some cutting), but I am now minus my upper left wisdom tooth.

They gave me a couple shots and numbed my lips. Procedure didn't hurt a bit. Fifteen, twenty minutes tops (tough bugger, it didn't want to come out).

About, oh, half an hour after I left the office... HOO BOY WAS I IN PAIN.

    Yeah... anyway so it's been a couple hours now. Lots of pain, but the ibuprofen helped quite a bit, so instead of whimpering and holding my jaw, I'm whining and complaining on IRC. :3 Apparently they want me to come back in two or three weeks to crank out my other two. Honestly, I'm not sure I want to deal with this again so soon. ^^;

Thanks for all the info, guys! I felt a lot better walking in knowing what to expect. <3
