also I don't know how you ppl can break down what you listen to so well, into uber-sub-genres... hell, how can artists even confine themselves to such genres?
I don't like any particular genres, just artists/groups...
I guess I lean toward indy rock and the softer side of techno...
definitely hate angry music that involves people barking/screaming like they have a monkey wrench lodged in their throats. IMO the voice is another instrument, so if you can't sing, for god's sake don't scream -- get by on your instrumental prowess... I get screamed at enough IRL, I don't need to get screamed at by my MP3 player too...
listen to a song featuring someone screaming about blood and death and such nonsense, and then listen to Elvis Costello's "I Want You" -- and tell me which anger is more powerful...
to get to the point: soul coughing, the beatles, aphex twin, sneaker pimps, led zep, infected mushroom, the postal service, air, cake, some radiohead, no doubt, etc = pwn
I still like Drum n Bass, even tho its 90% Amen, the small variations keep me hooked.
I like the photek/ teebee kinda stuff, aswell as the hive/tech itch kinda tunes. breakbeats are just lovely..
I like autechre alot lately, the 'selected ambient works' style sound is cool (like amber), not really up to date but a real nice period for electronica imo.
I like/ will listen to anything else which is either technically impressive (composition/ performance etc... [eg. artie shaw]) or has soul/ feeling put into the work [eg. miles davis]. I find thats a nice way to say "anything but pop".
but then again if I heard a pop tune with somthing to it, I wouldnt say no....
I don't consider myself too bound to genres, but for some reason computer music (for the lack of a better all-encompassing term) usually offers the kind of soundscapes that really catch my fancy. I do like some rock bands too, but they are few and far between. Actually, the only two that come to mind right now are Alice in Chains and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
For some reason I'm drawn towards the darker fringes of ambient and extremely distorted, grinding noise. I do also like old school industrial, like Throbbing Gristle, Enistürzende Neubauten, and SPK, but the following artists have had the most play time in my PA for the last month:
SKM-ETR (power electronics - extremely harsh stuff) Control (power electronics - also very harsh, but in a different way) Iszoloscope (rhythmic noise - beautiful stuff, very danceable and powerful) Tarmvred (rhythmic noise - this is what happens when a C=64 meets a distortion pedal, a drum machine and a mad swede) Lustmord (dark ambient - everybody should try Lustmord) Lull (dark ambient - very isolationistic, lonely sound here, definitely not party music) Gridlock (some kind of a post-industrial-IDM-hybrid, melodic and soft, yet edgy, older stuff has traces of ebm and sometimes even vocals)
As for the contents of my record shelf, click here.
As to what I despise - mainstream pop. Overproduced, no-content, soulless mainstream pop. It simply makes my head ache with its overcompressed, flat sound. There is nothing wrong with light pop music as a concept, but the producers have murdered every last inch of diversity and content from pop. I wish that someday people will get tired of the industry standard r'n'b, so the producers will be forced to come up with something else.
Most Japanese indie glam/metal/goth/industrial bands (re: Dir en grey, Lareine, Endorphine, Machine, Baiser, Kagrra, etc.)
General rock (inc. Japanese): Luna Sea, Chirolyn and the Angels, Everclear, Greenday, Nirvana, Weezer, Korn.
And I absolutely ADORE Rammstein.
Other than that, lots of video game OSTs and remixes. I like trance and club/hard house, but mostly I prefer that when I'm actually out at a club.
Bands I absolutely detest are... well, the only one I can think of that I absolutely hate with a passion is System of a Down, because their vocalist makes me want to stab myself in the face, and their songs bore me (musically speaking).
omg...Enya.....its cool that some people listien to her, because everyone has there own tastes. but i only hate it cause my 8th grade teacher played it every day during our study time. it got to me....any ways i like hip-hop, not rap. diff? chingy=rap pharcyde=hip-hop i like hardcore, not the rave stuff, stuff like poisin the well, hatebreed...etc. an funk, gotta love the funk i love the chili peppers but they went down hill after californication, but i still love em, an george clinton an the parliment are sic. bootsy is one bad **** bass player. for you techno people you guys should listien to mars&mystery, i think they still play together, if not mars is better i think. i dunno an aphrodiate, i think thats how you spell it. there sic. thats bout it. if you smoke herb listien to deltron the funky homosapien album 3030
