3dsmax/gmax Tutorials

Hi!
I've been into digital abstract art for some while now, but now when i see some things on this forum (Especially chrono's models) i really, really want to learn modelleing, with guns beeing the things I want to do the most.

I have got both 3dsmax and gmax, and now I'm wondering if there are any good newbie-modelling tutorials, preferrebly that learn's you to modell weapons. I found some pretty crappy tutorials on google and am wondering if someone has any good tips?

    The tutorials that came with Gmax/3ds max are a pretty good starting point. Read them, seriously.

    Ok, I've checked them out, and they are all just pictures + .3ds files without any descriptions whatsoever. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Did you open them in the program itself? Under "Help," the "Tutorials" option?

    Okey, I've read the boxmodelleing and the Lowpoly modelleing ones, now i really need a tutorial that helps me take my new knowlegde and show me how to apply it on a gun-model :<

    I'd check the sticky. It doesn't even need to be a tutorial for your specific program; for the most part, methods for creating Shape X are the same in any program, it's only the tools that differ.

    For a gun, one way to start is to draw a spline in the shape of the gun (side view), turn it into a flat plane, and extrude it into 3 dimensions. Add details from there. 3dsmax5 has a chess set tutorial (specifically the Knight) that deals with splines, and a "spaceship" tutorial that deals with extrusion. Not sure what version you're using.

    Ok, cool. I'll check it. Just a question, I've heard that booleans will fsck the PC and scaling, is that true?

    Booleans should be used carefully, and frankly little if at all in low-poly modeling. Experiment with them - try boolean-adding two cylinders to each other, then check the resulting mesh. It's a powerful tool, but for low-poly modeling generally causes more trouble than it's worth. I'd stick with vertex manipulation, extrusion, and other low-poly methods.

    Do a google search for a "CS Girl" tutorial. It's a step-by-step walkthrough of creating a player model. I know you want to do characters, but it's got a lot of useful techniques. You also might want to check out Polycount (www.planetquake.com/polycount) in general; they've got some good stuff.

    Yeah, I've read the CS girl tutorial, haven't completed it though (my friend has <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->).
    Ill check phl/pc, thanks a lot for the help coil <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> <3
