Game Freezing Up When Trying To Quit

since the latest steam update
As I'm sure everyone is aware, ever since the latest steam update, most users will experience some kind of game freeze when they try to quit. Sometimes they resort to hitting the reset button on their PC when this happens. For users running 2000 or XP, try this instead.

right now:
* Hit CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to invoke the Task Manger, and switch to the Processes tab. Close Task Manager, and it will remember this setting.

when the crash happens:
* Hit CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to invoke the Task Manager. You may not be able to see it, but you'll know that it worked when you stop hearing the looped sound that is so common to this crash problem.
* Hit H, which should find hl.exe in the process list. If you routinely have another process running that starts with H, then hit H the appropriate number of times to get to hl.exe by testing beforehand.
* Hit ALT+E to end the process, then hit either Y or SPACEBAR to confirm that you want to kill the process. (A sound will play for most users after hitting ALT+E.)
* hl.exe will die, and you will see your desktop again. Close the Task Manager and give a victory shout. If your gamma is borked, use the gamma reset tool included with NS.

Alternitively you can do CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the task manager and end task. I get the same problem after each update, and the task manager has always shown up when i do CTRL+ALT+DEL, and i can simply end NS.

But to avoid doing this and fix it, simply delete ClientRegistry.blob from the steam root directory, and platform.gcf from the \SteamApps directory. All of course while steam is closed.

Once done, restart steam and wait for it to update (the platform.gcf file is 10mb so may take time on slow connections).

Let me know if it works for everyone.

Deleting those files didn't help one iota for me, and I know that others have tried it with an equal lack of success. So for those that continue to crash, they can at least avoid having to hard reboot.

now my game looks like it would work, again...

well it worked the first time it started crashing, after steam updated.

but it seems it doesnt fix it for the new steam update.

looks like we will have to wait for the ns crew to get beta 4 out, or beta 3 with some kind of fix for this problem.

me as well.. also very often just during a map change, its SO annoying because even if i ctrl+alt+delete and end the task in task manager, my screen gamma is still set to what NS put it at and its WAY too bright.

if i then try to ignore the gamma and rejoin a new game of NS, the gamma ends up literally double what it should be. this same scenario happens to others ive played with, so i know its not a isolated problem.

looking for a fix for this, because nearly every time i play ns for more than 1 or 2 games it ends up freezing and i have to reboot to fix the gamma problem. major pain in the asss.

creative released NEW drivers for audigy 2, starting to wonder if it could be my audigy 2 drivers as people who are on audigy 1 dont have that many problems. hmmm what sound cards do you people have?

there is a simple solution to your gamma problem.
(directory u installed steam in):\Steam\SteamApps\(the email account u play steam with)\half-life\nsp\ResetGamma

running that app will reset your gamma to normal levels.. make a shortcut on your desktop so its more convienient

Since steam is still screwed up, I've resorted to using a small program who's sole purpose is to close hl.exe.

Here's where you can get it.

Well my reset app doesn't work...

Any other ways? (Besides display properties because that doesn't work for me either)

Unfortunately I have been dealing with these game freezes on disconnect since the patch a few weeks ago and none of the forum suggestions have worked so far.

    I've tried:
    - "stopsound; quit"
    - deleting .blob file (etc) to force update
    - your keyboard shortcuts to kill the process

None of these work and I just have to turn the power off to "fix the problem."

It's so ridiculous that so many users are experiencing this nonsense and valve's steam developers haven't fixed the problem yet. This is very frustrating.

The stopsound; quit helps lower the chance of the crash/soundloop for me. I get the crash every once in a while now.

hmmm. it would be nice to know what soundcards you're all running. mines a creative SB128. it would seem the problem is associated with sound. maybe the steam update **** up on creative sound cards?
  • Sucky_DuckySucky_Ducky Join Date: 2003-05-04 Member: 16043Members
I know it's not the soundcard...

Or Steam **** up ALL sound cards, since I've so far seen Audigy 1, 2, Creative, Pro's and all other types of sound cards crashing...

I'm using onboard btw.. Still loving the crash-bug... *cough*
  • viperviper Join Date: 2004-03-18 Member: 27402Members
yeah i jus remembered i did take my sb128 out a while ago and using on board nforce now. crashing for me still.

strange thing is only some people are having that problem. everyone list their system specs, see if theres a pattern emerging.

    - AMD Athlon XP 2400
    - nForce 2 w/ onboard sound + network + graphics (geforce 4mx - temp card)
    - 1gb DDR Ram 333mhz bus
    - Win XP SP1

I haven't updated my nForce drivers for a few months, nor my graphics drivers. But i always have troubles with the nForce unified drivers as i recall.

well i dont play ns no more because i know it will crash my machine when quitting. None of these fixes work for me at all, the only thing that does work is Ctrl + alt and Del and even so i can only do this once. i am never lucky 2 times in a row because it will crash. The only way i have found is to ctrl alt and del while IN GAME rather than after the crash.

would be nice if the NS could release a patch to fix this since a couple of us are experiancing this problem.
  • DrDeviceDrDevice Join Date: 2003-08-16 Member: 19812Members
when i ctrl-alt-del, it takes several minutes (5-6 ish) for the task manager to come up. once it does, i can just end task on HL.exe, its just such a pain, but if you think yours is crashing crashing, it might well be worth turning the volume off, and going and watching tv for a bit, just to see wether task manager eventually comes up.

(my soundcard is a bog standard SB live)

Its a STEAM and NS problem, the fact that this bug doesnt occur in any of the other mods i have is a tad strange. Maybe there is something in NS and something in the NEW steam which dont like each other. Either way one of them needs fixing and steam doesnt seem to care that much about no official mods

The Steam update of 04-02-04 eliminated the problems associated with half life freezing when attempting to exit a game.

Then we don't need the "Fix for crash when quitting" sticky thread, right?
