<div class="IPBDescription">WTH is up?</div> first, there was this annoying, long time taking "update" for steam...
then i loaded it. as i wanted to play, HL refused to start with an error.
when i tryed to run again, that error still ocured (i tryed 2 times) - at the second time of each try the whole system crashed.
now, a few minutes ago, i installed the new forceware drivers for my geForce 2 mx/400.
now it appears to work fine. played a few minutes on ns_nancy (don't know if this is right - the readyroom looked like a bar, the easteregg was "behind" -i'm don't telling any more about it- marine start is in the cockpit of the ship, the hive, known before as "unnamed", now named "mother" hive [someone must heared me because im used to name the starthive mother...]) - then the whole system crashed again as i hatched as lerk...

someone asked for the returning error. because i just installed the new forcewares, HL switched to software mode ("Current Hardware selected isn't capable of running in the selected video mode" or that).
I rebooted, then the problem where solved, switched back to D3D hardware mode, 1024 x 768. started to play on "Teilchenbeschleuniger #4" (German NS only server, name is something like "Particleaccelerator #4"). The player count, as i joined, was 1 marine vs 2 aliens, so i joined marines.
a few seconds after i joined the match i got jp and a pack of mines, placed em in the base entrance. onos incomming, killed me and destroyed ips. ex-commander got pwned at mother hive by a gorge.
next round started,
i joined aliens because marines where already stacked.
made my way, gone to an res nozzle, put down an rt, heared marines comming and decided to run away. they left my rt alone and they build an armory near that rt. i came back as skulk, got killed. respawned at the hive, decided to go lerk to spore them, gestated and as i hatched, the system crashed.
so far, i dont know what happened to the system because i had to cut the power to reboot...

I get the same problem after each update, and the task manager has always shown up when i do CTRL+ALT+DEL, and i can simply end NS.
But to avoid doing this and fix it, simply delete ClientRegistry.blob from the steam root directory, and platform.gcf from the \SteamApps directory. All of course while steam is closed.
Once done, restart steam and wait for it to update (the platform.gcf file is 10mb so may take time on slow connections).

with the tip mentioned here, it looks like it's working again.
Im facing it again,
and now I have a reason:
ns_tanith - game's already screwed up (they relocated to cargo, and are just establishing an outpost at SatCom), i tryed to get sat back, rand through the vents at fusion, got killed at satcom. respawned after 1 minute or so, decided, that its time for some DC, went up to the top of the waste handling hive, start gestating to gorge (to place the chambers), faced the ramp below the RT @ Waste, there where 2 aliens, one skulk, and one which i don't remember.
it appears, that the skulk bit the other alien (soundloop...), and since i have a small lag when i use parasite or skulkbite for the first time when i just loaded the game, i think this is the issue...

everything absolutly fresh.
playing on co_kestrel, game's already quite long (lvl10s are present), I'm marine, battleing around, killing some superskulks at marinespawn, folowing a jp, going near hive, get killed, respawn, cloaked fade appears suddenly,
request window:
z_free
freed some z_buffer
ok
or that... can't remember. if it appears again, i'll make screenshots.
(I hope Beta 4 is somewhat more compatible to the latest engine build of HL...)
OS, graphic card, RAM, etc.
Also, problems with any other Steam game?

What OS? If ME, I had nothing but problems. Use XP Home now.
Looking at RAM spec, I would definitely get more. When I run, HL uses upwards of 120+.
Would also run in OpenGL.
Not familar with your graphic driver, but I use the same card and use the nvidia drivers. New one came out 4-1-04.
