Gotta be directly behind em to grab. Once you do, you can either knock em out, hold em so they choke to death, or snap their necks immediately. I prefer taking them to a corner and letting them choke, while either talking or typing to them. *laughs evilly*

This games' concept is soooo ripped from the UT mod Thievery.

It's just Thievery in a futuristic setting... don't they have any shame.
• baconflapsbaconflaps Join Date: 2004-02-09 Member: 26314Members
Have you headlocked someone yet? The best is when they whine at you as you're doing it, and you snap their neck with a satisfying 'crack'.

I had one guy beg for me to only knock him out, so I obliged him. Then I did it again and went *snap*.

Eh....no.

First off, looking at that mod and everything their "Going For", its NOTHING like the pandora tommorrow MP demo. In fact, I'd say Thievery sounds rather good, but your still wrong.

And as another thing: I can only play the game at a respectable rate at res 640x480! Whaaa?! I play the reg game at 1024x768, so I oughta be able to take this one easy. Either way-

The graphics are SWEET. The sound isn't half bad. The way it all works is TONS of fun, I remember this one time one of my friends ran out so a merc would chase him, and "Thump", I drop onto his head from high up. Insta-kill. Good stuff.

Been having a blast on the demo so far, it seems like the spies have it too easy when it comes to confrontation with the mercs tho, doesn't it? As a spy I have no problem getting the first hit in with electro shock, then just circling back and choking the merc, figured they'd be played more with the idea of avoiding the mercs instead.

I wouldn't say so. If the Mercs are worth their 2 cents, its perfect, cause me and a guy I've never met had no trouble when we worked together.

Well, let's see. Both games have two teams. One team has to infiltrate by using stealth, and the other team has to guard the objectives and kill the intruders.

Infiltrators take out guards/mercs by attacking from behind.

Sticky Shocker = Crack Arrow

Spy cam/sticky cam = Spying orb

Chaff grenade = Invisibility Potion (makes it harder to be detected)

Noise Emitter = Footstep Arrow

FlashBang grenade = Flashbomb (blinds opponent temporarily).

Smoke Grenade = Smoke arrow (got baleeted because it caused huge pings)

M160 - Crossbow

Flares - Flares

Mines - Mines

Spy trap - Whistler

Tazer - Paralyse Bolt

Fragmentation Grenade - Firebolt

Phospherous grenade - ... blood left behind by killed AI guards/thieves/guards/civilians?

Every item in SC:PD has a similar item in Thievery... and thievery has plenty more that aren't in SC:PD. Speed potions, health potions, catfall potions (silence), lockpicks, calltrops, moss arrows... and lots more I'm forgetting. The only real original thing I see in SC:PD are the vision modes... Spiffy, albeit a bit unneccesary in a stealth game.

SC:PD is set in the future, while Thievery is set in a steampunk universe... which can be roughly translated into medieval period, but with advanced technology, like electricity and steampower.

OH MY GOD!!! HE IS RIGHT!!!!
(note I am about to refute you )

if you look at it that way, then every single stealth style game is exactly the same. None of those items are original to Thief (what Thievery is bassed on). Every game has some weapons hat a re rather similar, its just harder to make them different when you are ussing such a small scope (multiplayer stealth). The differences in the games are in:

1) Look and feel: This is all important, the games just don't look or feel anytihng alike. The weapons work differently, the game itself handles differently (VERY differently), and If I remember correctly thievery is not 2v2 (some thing that realy effects the game).

wait a sec, that was suposed to be a few points, oh well. Yes, the base concepts are the same, but they are the same for alot of games, and there in comes the entire look and feel thing. Oh wait, second point:

2) Game Play modes (remember you only played a demo): SC:PTMP (thats a great one ) has different game play modes then Thievery did.

there yah go.

oh and:

M160 = XBow?
OMG THEY BOTH SHOOT PEOPLE!!!!!!
every one is bitting off of CS b/c they use slug throwers!!

Erm... Thievery is just multiplayer Thief for UT (pretty much)

So therefore based on your logic SC:PT is a ripoff of thief....

Both games are similar because they're both stealth games....

This man is onto something! Quick! Assemble a crack team of coders/modelers/skinners and get this thing made fast. One suggestion though, if a basketball player misses a shot, he gets run down by a motorcycle.

Think of it like this.

Game Concepts are not similar to Game Types.
There are a dozen more stealth games out there, and they're all very different from eachother. However, taking a concept and only changing the pictures and names of everything is going a bit too far. Offcourse gameplay cannot be copied, but gameplay and game concept are two very different things as well.

Let's say I would take Natural Selections concept, make a new game by using the exact same concept, but only changing the visuals/names and some details.

OH MY GOD! A RHINO! NOO WE GOT EATEN BY BATS! COM WE NEED MORE PLASMA RIFLES! WHERES THAT SONIC CANNON?

... and thievery does have a few game modes, like thiefmatch. However, what SC:PT throws at you aren't different game modes, they're just different objectives. If we're gonna play it that way, thievery has about 20 different game modes.

I'm not saying that CS:PT is a bad game, I'm just saying that it's a shameless ripoff.

Its virtually impossible to think of an original concept now.

Based on your logic NS is a copy of Starcraft, AvP/AvP2 etc.

Stop going "OMGZ0rOSZLAX J)) STOLZ)FR)ER THTE GHAMEESZOR FROMAS THIS ONRE ZORLROSL!<!£>RFW?SAWDCER%LE£OLRVCML£$" and learn that they're both 2 completly different games.

• GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
jimmeh's actually right to some degree... they're probably both completely unrelated.
For example, when I was a kid I invented a silly but weird sorta gothic undead jester character I thought was original and cool; at least until a friend told me he saw exactly the same character on the sign for a night club in spain (I hadn't been to spain yet so don't argue about unconscious influences ).

It's the same making up a name for the net or just about any other idea; the world's population is easily large enough for multiple people to come up with the same idea. I bet there's at least 5 other people with the same game concept who just never made the games in the first place ~shrug~

for god's sake, stealth games are an entire genre, you can't say SC ripped off a UT mod any more than you can say Sonic the Hedgehog ripped off Super Mario Bros. on the other hand, you can't say Sonic owes Mario nothing. get with the program!

oh yes, I forgot to say the on-topic part: I get a black screen of death requiring a hard reboot when I try to play the MP demo it seems 50% of us can't get it to work right. you'd think they'd have worked harder to make the demo less buggy, considering they're trying to make people WANT the game, not avoid it...

I did. And I think I found a fix for it crashing on you:

Make your own game. Eventually, people will join. Once they do, have fun. Once you feel like it, kill off the game, and go join. Should work now(did with me!)

ja.

I don't think I've given my thoughts on this one yet so here goes:

Overall: Good, but I'm not sure if I'll be buying it. It would be "OMG TEH PWN" if it were not for some serious flaws that suprisingly are all technical rather than due to game design (meaning they could potentially be fixed).

After playing the game, I'm now HAPPY with the 4 player limit. It is indeed a good thing. 8 might have been okay too, but 16 would have just been nuts.

Its great with so little players because, especially with voice comm built into the game, you get a much more personal gameplay experience. And with such, there is more of a percieved obligation to use teamwork (at least for the mercs). I've only played like 2 games where I had a merc partner who absolutely refused to work as a team, and we lost those 2 games as well...

For some reason though most spies don't feel the need for teamwork. But when spies do work together man oh man do they pwn. Note that "working together" doesn't necessarily mean being right next to each other. One spy can be on the other side of the level, and PURPOSELY trigger an alarm letting the enemy know they are there, drawing them away while the other sneaks in and hax0rs the gibson. I love doing that. :D

But yeah, the gameplay is so damned fun.. Why oh why did they have to make it have such a horrible horrible interface? The key bindings aren't even remotely the same as single player! You sometimes have to bind the SAME FUNCTION to 2 different keys, one for spy team, one for mercs. WHY!?? THAT MAKES NO SENSE!

And the whole forcing people to play through ubi.com... ugh.. They simply can't handle it.

The netcode does seem a bit dodgy too, which is ridiculious considering there's only 4 people and no physics system of any kind (not even moving objects like a freakin door). Quake 1 (not QuakeWorld either) had superior netcode, which is quite sad.

Looks to me like your high and mighty mod is 'shamelessly ripping off' Thief!

Seriously. There was no need to pull that crap. Just look at the 10,000 FPS's out on the market today. With your logic, similar games are obviously ripping one another off. Just TRY and name all the games that have featured a rocket launcher of some variety.

Just because the concept is similar, doesn't mean it's the same game. Hell you're trying to compare a game set in the middle ages, to one set in the future...
