Gaming Soundtracks

Soundtracks from games
I've been listening to the Grim Fandango soundtrack which is stonking. Lives beyond the game.
Any other decent or interesting soundtracks out there ?

I want like a post apocolyptic game with nothing, but metal music playing.

Not exactly. NIN was responsible for the Q1 soundtrack, although it seems that Lustmord's albums were in heavy rotation in the studio during the work on the soundtrack. Why didn't id Software just hire Mr. Lustmord instead, is a question no-one can probably answer.
The Q2 soundtrack was made by Sonic Mayhem, with the exception of (IIRC) 2 tracks, one by Rob Zombie and the other by someone else.
On the topic of excellent game soundtracks, Mechwarrior 2 and Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries have soundtracks that put a lot of games to shame. American McGee's Alice is also worth mentioning.

/me whees in unison.
Any Final Fantasy soundtrack by maestro Nobuo Uematsu is worthy of listening to.
If you liked the soundtrack to Grim Fandango, you might like the soundtrack to other Lucasarts games. Although I'm not sure it's the same style of music. Anyway, you might want to get the midis of Sam & Max. Except for the Snukey's muzak it's not half bad :).
Most of the music I listen to is from games, and about half of it's in midi form on the computer (if anyone knows of a free program that can convert midis to mp3s (and yes, I'm aware of what that involves) I would be eternally grateful :)), but quite a bit of it's from CDs.
Command & Conquer (the original, here)
There are some funky little programs around that can read Westwood's data storage format. You can use them to get at the track files, which are simply .wavs. Use a .wav to .mp3, burn to CD, and voila! Good stuff.
Total Annihilation
A bit different from usual; it's classical music. It's good, though, trust me. The building music is a little boring, but the battle music is good stuff.\
Mechwarrior 2
Lots and lots of tracks. A little hard to describe what kind of music it is, other than to say that the tracks were obviously written for the missions (or the missions for the tracks). The tracks are "roaming across a desert looking for things to blow up", and "desperate race across a city in the middle of the night", and "single combat to the death", you get the idea. Fortunately, they're all good to listen to anyway :)
Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries
Fewer tracks than Mech 2, and the style is much more rock. My knowledge of music isn't well developed enough to pinpoint the genre of rock, so I'll have to fall back on "it's good stuff" again.
The aforementioned Sam & Max Hit the Road
With my newbie musical identification skills, I'm going to call it "Jazz" (and, yes, it's still "good stuff"). The first few tracks are really good, with funky little bits in em. The ones towards the end are a little boring, unless you've played the game (and they therefore mean something to you).
Quake II
Rock. I'm going to go out on a limb and say "Industrial rock". Very few tracks (by comparison), which is a pity because they own :).
Other stuff which I've got floating around but wouldn't really recommend:
*Rise of the Triad
*Wing Commander II
*Strike Commander
*Warcraft
*Warcraft II
*Dune II
*Doom and Doom II (what was I thinking? Unless you really like background music, avoid...)
*Wing Commander: Armada
*Wing Commander: Privateer (yes, I like Wing Commander :P)
Shivers
Max Payne
Unreal Tournament
Battlefield: 1942
Deus Ex
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (1 & 2)
Half Life
Homeworld
Metal Gear Solid
Metroid
Castlevania II (town)
Contra (waterfall)
Natural Selection
Parasite Eve 2
Resident Evil Code: Veronica X
Resident Evil 2
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Fallen
System Shock 2
Tomb Raider
Twisted Metal
Jet Moto
Crystalis
Legacy of the Wizard (only a few)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (only one song, electric kingdom or some space name, can't remember)

Please do check remix.overclocked.org first though as like 70% of my collection is from there. Though sadly their DL'ing is a bit screwy lately :(
