Carve

How Deadly is it?
Ok i have seen many tutorials that suggest using carve to cut holes in walls. they all warn of problems that could stem from that method. But you seem to want the carve tool to explode. after doing some tests i have found that hammer seems to handle carveing simple shapes very well. complex shapes get b0rked very fast though. i ask because i had planed on putting in the vents in my map after the basic layout was done. I see here that this could ruin my map. and i read elsewhere that if done carfully it will not. So i ask you. Can i carve vents into simple walls if i am carfull to check for and correct hammers oddities after the carve is done or is there really no way that the carve tool can ever be used?

Carve can chop up blocks into funny segments. Personally, I use carve only for cutting a square hole in a square wall (for a trough for pipes, or a vent, or something). Using it like that hasn't given me any trouble.

Personally, I prefer to just use the clip tool to remove the section I'm putting a vent in. If you set it to the mode that preserves both halves of the clip, you can cut a strip out of the wall, and then cut the vent out of that strip.

well speaking of deadly it can seriously screw up the VIS compile and can crash Half-Life when running the compiled map even if the editor can't detect anything wrong with it...

I prefer the clip tool to since carve does weird things and if theres one thing I don't like it's weird things. Especially if it screws up the map which we all know takes a lot of effort and time to create. I just don't like retracing my steps due to a tool error...

If your going to carve against the advice of practically everyone, then do it like this: instead of carving the wall directly, make a brush that perfectly encases the brush you intend to carve with and replace the wall with this. If carve screws anything up it is this small brush, it won't "explode" your entire wall into 20 pieces, only this brush. Never carve a brush more than once with anything but a block with it's sides parallell to the coordinate axes.

    my personal hint:

    DONT use it. NEVER!

create holes manually so you will be able to reduce polies and control the speeds. shure it takes its time. at the end you have to admit that hand-made holes are less confusing in 2d-views

...unless you're using Quark. Quark's carve tool is a LOT more forgiving than WC/VHE's.
