Anyway, got myself a Fender acoustic today, very pretty piece of equp.
Anyway, aside from future plans of getting actual lessons, anyone have any tips? Know of any online guides? Have any cake?

Blister or bleed? Wow, that's a whole lotta hard playin'. I'd just play until my fingertips were too sore to put any significant pressure on the strings, then I'd stop playing altogether for a couple of days.
After maybe two weeks, there would be no pain and no horrible rattling sound in the strings, but I'd still suck at guitar. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
if you get good enough maybe you can join a clan... er band <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
its really easy compared to normal sheet music.
(although I still cant do it to speed).
basically the line is the string, the number is the fret! (if you couldnt work that out already, otherwise sorry for being patronising).
theres loads of free tab on the net, pick a song you like and get practising!
try to work out a pattern of finger movement which requires the least hand movement and overall effort.
tab is probably muuch better for training you up than slogging out powerchords (although this has its place)..
if you dont know, powerchords are much easier to play when the guitar is in drop D tuning.
really easy to tune to drop D, just drop the bottom string (the thickest - some people have fuunny notions of 'bottom string') down 2 semitones so that its the same note as the 3rd thickest string (but one octave down).
now put your finger across the bottom three strings on the same fret = instant power chord, ,great if your into metal style playing.

there is your basic tab outline
starting form the thickest string on your guitar it goes EADGBE
now go to <a href='http://www.thetabworld.com/' target='_blank'>here for tab</a>
learn rinse repeat. learn blues for the rythem feeling. learn rock for coodernation(sp?)
an jazz for skill. but thats my opinion. or you can just learn box chords an play punk all night. ok bye
EDIT: oh ya BUY A METRONOME(sp?) learn timing, if not any song you play will sound crappy. if you wanna learn a song listien to it first, then try to play it alon, then play it while listining. also learn how to read sheet music, itll help you. then youll know timing. and what those cute littl dots with flags mean, like quater notes, eight notes, eighth rests, quarter rests, dottd half note, blah blah. its fun. dont get discouraged. be patient, i sucked **** first tiem i played, but then again i play bass, an bass isnt that hard.....unless you try to play Bach, or that stewart hampton guy... whatever. flea rules.
Best website I've found so far for getting guitar tab is <a href='http://www.guitartabs.cc' target='_blank'>this one</a>. Loads of guitar tab, easy to search, and the links always work.
anyhoo, after I while when I was messing around I noticed how much guitar music I actually listen to(mainly Dashboard Confessional and such).
Best of luck to you learning!

Why? What's wrong with learning to read guitar tab?
- it's a whole lot easier to <i>find</i> guitar tab
- guitar tab is (almost always) free
- it's hard to screw up a song from a tab (unless it's incorrect, of course)
- it takes, oh, five minutes to learn how to read guitar tab
Besides, reading "real" music isn't even necessary. My brother is damn good with a guitar, but he can't read a single note of "real" music. And IIRC, numerous label musicians can't read sheet music either.
That's the guitar I got, btw. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Sure! I'll be the Air DJ. You know, all these cool bands now have DJ's. That's a nice piece of work Yoshi.

...er... can I be the air vocalist? heh?
Anyway, on-topic:
1. Sweet 'tar.
2. Don't know what kind of music you like really but I'd suggest the tabs:
Too Fast for Love by Mtley Crue
Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana
Those are pretty easy tabs, and while Too Fast for Love wasn't originally played on an acoustic it sounds cool to me.
Do you have nylon or steel strings BTW?
Anyway, nice guitar, I've been learning through a CD-Rom tutor for the past few months, it's pretty damned hard but I'm getting better.

because for instrumentalists (like me), it's fking impossible to get the guitarist to play an "A major" chord or something. Or maybe "this is a G# not G." I hate when the guitarist goes, "uhhh, which fret is that?" or takes a minute to find the right note. And while hes finding the right note he gets ADD and is like "omg listen to this!" and then later on we have a G# against a G natural. And it sounds bad.
EDIT: oh ya i forgot.....FLEA from the Red Hot Chili Peppers cant read music for ****, an hes a bad ****, Hendrix couldnt read music either....cough cough....
P.S. after you get alot better buy a Takamine(sp?) or an Ibanez acoustic. learn blues since its an acoustic, go outside an play, its fun.
I just think tab is the fastest way to teach yourself, if your starting from scratch.
tab can teach melodies and chord progressions, its all you need to get going!
if you want to take things into the songwriting area, I think a good background in playing by ear/ general musicality will help you out more than reading sheet music anyday!
(plus sheet music is so damn annoying, ,what a stupid concept to be honest, same symbols just changed by height. Its really not user friendly, unlike tab.. ah numbers!!! now your talking!)
maybe, but only a guitarist will be able to read tabs. so if you're playing with anybody else, ie a trumpet, sax, trombone, keyboard, or (classical) vocalist, you won't be able to read from the same music.
also, knowing how to read from sheet music implies that you know that, for example, the third fret on the second string is a C natural. (A + 3 half steps)
if you just learn tabs, that note will forever be "second string, third fret," something that non-guitarists will never understand.

I wish i was as spontaneous and/or rich as you
It makes my ears bleed.
Dashboard is good. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Just my opinion of course.
