    I am having the same problem. I have the retail version of Half-Life with 1.1.1.0 update installed. I was under the assumption that NS supported retail versions of HL.

    Before installing NS3.0 Beta 1 you should have started a Half-Life singleplayer game at least for once... As you start Half-Life from the games window, Steam creates and prepares the necessary files and folders required not only for HL but also third party Mods...

    Just start a singleplayer game of Half-Life through games window... Then you can install NS3.0 b1 and other 3rd party mods...

    here, have a install guide:

    <!--c1--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->1) Install Steam
    2) Play HL atleast Once via Steam
    3) Install NS V3.0 Beta 1
    4) Install NS V3.0 Beta 4 (point this at steam\steamApps\your@email\Half-Life\)
    5) Install NS V3.0 Beta 4a (See * at bottom)

    Search your HDD for a folder called nsp.

    if you have more than one you messed up.  try again.

    if you folow these steps properly you will not get client.dll or map.bsp errors.

    If you are positive you have folowed them corectly then redownload the installer form a different location.

    *There aslo seems to be a bug with, atleast some of, the 4a installers.  Try pointing it at steamApps\your@email\ instead of steamApps\your@email\half-life

    Note: This is a file stored on my desktop because I have to use it so many times.<!--c2--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--ec2-->

    Thansal is correct:

    "*There aslo seems to be a bug with, atleast some of, the 4a installers. Try pointing it at steamApps\your@email\ instead of steamApps\your@email\half-life"

    I walked a friend of mine thru the install process, which could badly use a unified installer, several times and finally ended up doing it myself. As I walked thru the procedure I ended up with two half-life directories even tho I've installed NS bout 20 times with no issues. Turns out the beta4a installer he had would append an additional half-life directory to the directory we'd chosen for it to install into.

    Make sure you do not have duplicate half-life directories under steamapps\username@hostname\ This seems to be where it ends up making additional directories. We ended up nuking the additional HL dirs under steam and re-installing from step 1 up. After each install check the HL dir to make sure there isn't an additional HL dir under it. Then proceed with the next installer. Somehwere along the line you may notice the dupe dir get created. Nuke it and retry the install being very carefull where you point the installer.
