I Have No Idea What I'm Doing Wrong

<div class="IPBDescription">Trying to compile and play 1st map</div> My game and build configs should be correct, and I've looked at the FAQs and getting started stuff.

Here's what I get when compiling~ I know it doesn't look right, but I Hammer is doing its own thing without my say-so. Notice how it is sticking quotes into the filenames themselves; I didn't name them this way. Hammer is also renaming .bsps to: myemail.bsp. Sigh...

This error immediately follows:

<b>Could not find filesystem dll to load</b>

I did a search for this error. The only answer was that the paths are wrong. My paths are correct unless Hammer is screwing them up purposely (has a habit of doing that). However, the map is supposed to be compiled regardless of the error. So I start a server, then it crashes at the 'connecting to local server' point.

the error is steam related. as far as i know there is no good fix for this and you have to run the map manually from steam.

the other problem is that your compiler cannot open ns_1stmapl.p0 which is preventing the other steps from running. fixing thses two things should allow you to mae a working map.

try<a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=67167' target='_blank'> this thread</a> see if you can get anything from there.

Put your files in another directory, like C:\NS or something. The compiler gets confused by the period in your email address.

If you look at where his .map file is, it's not in the directory that causes problems (in the full steam directory, the "@" symbol causes compiler problems).

Have you done a check for problems in VHE? Also, what is the full path of your compile tools? I can see the little "~1" causing some problems, so try moving the TOOLS to a different location, not the map source.

[Edit]I just noticed the location of your ns.wad file. That is causing issues, so move it to a different location, such as your C:\ drive or something, and you should be just ducky.[/Edit]

The "Could not find filesystem dll to load" error appears specially when there's a Steam Update and you try to exec the game first.

Run Steam before launching the game, so it downloads the updates.

It's only needed when there's a Steam updated, once you update, you can do it as always.

    Also:

The extra quote sign may be in your compile configuration... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

That extra quote is the result of the "@" symbol overloading the compiler arguments. Go home.

The compile tools are in c:\program files\valve hammer editor\tools

Maybe ALL of my directories have to be 8 characters or under? <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I don't get any more errors aside from the 'can't find filesystem dll', but NS still crashes when I try loading the map. I have to copy the .bsp myself since, no matter how I configure it, VHE copies files into the the same and wrong directory.

Your ns.wad file is still in a directory with the "@" symbol. Move it somewhere else where it doesn't have that symbol and you should be fine.

Eh, that shouldn't be an error. I read all my .wads from my Steam directory, with the @. The only problem I've noticed is when placing a map in that directory.
  • ZaziZazi Join Date: 2002-05-26 Member: 672Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
That's odd... I have ALWAYS had problems when trying to use any file in my steam directory during compile. Oh well...

I never had any problem with STEAM and VHE... till the stupid cargotruck1.wad problem... feh...

I think... tho... that perhaps you didn't move XP Cagey's .dll files to the right place in the windows file? Double check to make sure you added those 2 .dll files... I know I forgot the first time I tried setting up VHE XD

I never had a problem with the @ sign... perhaps you didn't tell it to enable long filenames?
