Don't ever use Norton Internet Security
Where shall I begin. I installed norton internet security because I thought I was under attack. Since I installed it, the following things (completly unrelated to my internet security, mind you) have happened.

1. My FPS in steam games dropped by 50.

2. NS's gamma set utility stopped working.

3. I suffered severe lag in-game.

4. Later, norton decided that all the shortcuts on my desktop were viruses, and created a rule that PREVENTED ALL ICON ASSOCIATIONS FROM WORKING.

5. It didn't protect me from anything in paticular.

So, kids. Buy a hardware firewall. If you must get a software one, do not get norton internet security. It is the lose.

    AVG
Best free anti-virus program and one of the best anti-virus programs overall.

Did you turn off auto-protect when you play games? That will solve the FPS problem

Best to just ditch Norton and get AVG. The price is right.

Trying to play any game with Norton AV running on your computer is like racing in a dragrace with an elephant carcass strapped to your rear bumper.

I still have norton antivirus. It works fine for the time being. However, the internet security package (firewall and who knows what else) is what caused my computer to explode.

I just use the anti virus and system utilities. Tip: NEVER EVER install the recycle bin protection thingamajig whatever its called. Or Windoctor. And yes, the firewall is the devil. I used to just use it for the popup/banner protection. I haven't use it since I got Firebird(fox).

whatever happened to using good old ZoneAlarm anyway?

    I once used Norton firewall..
Then it decided to break itself in an update.
THEN, it wanted me to pay money for it to fix itself..
    Hahahaha. No.

Don't uninstall it either, it'll mess your admin account on Windows up if you're running XP. I loath NIS.

I keep it installed, god knows why since I always shut it off as soon as I start my computer to reduce lag. I guess i'm semi-safe from h4x0rs seeing as i've got another computer between me and the intarweb.

rather than use the more common systems like Norton or whatever I use "no virus or haxxor protection whatsoever". It comes inclusive with no firewall, no virus guard and... strangely enough... no problems.

From 5 years of using this highly technical system I've personally contracted 1 virus... which was from idiot I let use my PC while I went shopping. He downloaded something dodgy and hasn't even been allowed within a mile radius of my keyboard once I got back and found out what he'd done, let alone using the comp =P

    Hardware firewalls are your friend.

Even ZoneAlarm is annoying, all software firewalls are, everytime you run anything to do with the internet at all seven hundred windows pop up asking wether you realise that this program is running, wether you realise its using the internet, wether you realise you are actually at a computer and wether you realise that (insert name of firewall here) is so great because it told you all of this.

    Grr

I actually have a D-Link router with a built in firewall (...do any not have a firewall?). See, the only problem is, one day I was having terrible problems with the internet, and I had to shut down the firewall and open all the ports...yea, then I forgot to turn it back on.

Basically my router isn't a firewall anymore than an ethernet cable. It would help if I hadn't forgotten the password...you know?

(if anyone knows how I can permanently reset my router, that'd be nice, because the connection reset (pencil in the reset recess, unplug, plug back in with reset button still pressed, unplug again, plug in as normal) doesn't reset it to default settings (even when leaving it off for a while))

<--Network...something...guy. Router Screwer-Upper? I dunno...no virus either way though...plenty of adware and crap, but I get that here at school too, with the crazy ResNet that basically blocks all my ports and gives me a bunch of lag but stops nothing and has no real point...

BlackICE's detection system has always been a little on the crap side.

I just run a combination of AVG AntiVirus and ZoneAlarm. A free solution that works just fine for me.

I've been using the norton firewall for about 2 years now... Havent had a single problem with it.

Thus far it's saved me from h4x0rs from Turkey to Vietnam, from "The Rat" trojan horse to "Netbus" and others of it's ilk.

    Whatever works I guess.

Oh, and I've blocked MSN and IE from accessing the net using Norton, DIE MS, DIE!@

I work in a PC store. I tell my customers to never NEVER touch Norton IS. Then they do anyway, silly customers. Then I have to bill them 200 dollars when it breaks and I have to manually remove it. (then the boss takes all that money and pays me my paltry hourly wages, but that's neither here nor there)

So I'm torn. I'd never use it on my home PC, but it sure does help to bring in business.

ZoneAlarm for me. It's great. I enjoy being told whenever something attempts to connect to the Internet without permission. It alerts me to spyware or other programs that are attempting to send anonymous usage statistics (or something along those lines).

Necrotic, I don't really know why you had the problem. You may have not been saving your decision for all future access attempts.
  • GeminosityGeminosity :3 Join Date: 2003-09-08 Member: 20667Members
to be honest I'm kinda inclined to think that the firewall/Anti-Virus producers are generating their own business. After all where do you think the news that tells us virusses are on a rampage find out that kind of stuff? And who's the first lot to 'discover' virusses? ^~

As for lots of people trying to bang on your firewall, while I try not to think that the companies would program your FW to pop up false alerts to make you think it's doing something from time to time, I do lean towards the idea that people accessing your PC is 99.9% irrelevant to your life. They're probably just mis-routed connections, nosey 'hackers' (who look but don't touch) and other non-harmful nonsense that you honestly shouldn't care about. Seriously... what do you have on your PC that would be so terrible for others to see? Piccies of you dancing naked infront of a mirror with satanic symbols tatooed all over your private areas? XD
