How does the jetpack work?

is it like the swimming system but in the air? in other words, do you just look where you want to go and you go there in a straight line? or is it like that old arcade game lunar lander where you have to control your thrust so you don't crash into things, and you can see you have momentum and gravity is working on you?

Are they used more to assist jumps, or actually fly you around the map? I always imagined those marines as like the jumpjet infantry from Tiberian Sun :p

I hope its like the tribes 1 jetpack, so it wont be abused. Or even have its energy like a standard stamina bar. The stamina for it goes down, no more flight abuility till it charges back up.

Jetpack is like the jetpack in tribes 2. You get thrust and minor mid-air control when you press and hold jump.

Lerk is like the old arcade game joust.

Yeah, there's a jetpack fuel energy bad thingy on the bottom right of HUDs.

Pretty much yes.

It's very similar to the jetpack in the mod Canned Tuna. Similar, but not exactly the same.

Actually, the closest comparison I've encountered is the Mecc jetpack in Giants: Citizen Kabuto. It works almost exactly like that.

What happens when lerk hits the wall?

Like mecc jetpack? Thats the way I always thought of it. That mecc jetpack was pretty "realistic" and fun in the same time. Good solution.

.. He stops?

A lerk can also glide by holding his jump jet, and each time he "jumps" he gains height, just like Joust.

any better explanation because i never played giants :o
• DreadDread Join Date: 2002-07-24 Member: 993Members
Legionnaired, could you please give me more information? Lerk stops in the air and stays still like a chopper? He drops to the ground? Changes automatically direction? Stays clinging in the wall?

Necro, in Giants you had a power which dropped always when you used the jetpack and then rise again when not using it. When you pushed the flying button the guy rised straight up, but if you pressed forward key, the guy would go up and forward, so you could keep pauses between jetpacking if you didn't want to rise too high, only go forward. I hope you understood something, pretty messy explanation.

Clarification:

Jetpack accelleration is initially on the slow side, but gains speed the longer you hold it. It can be used for evasive maneuvers and to avoid falling damage, but must be timed to make sure it slows you in time (one fun thing to do is jump into the pit in the Marine Start on NS_Nothing, and try and gauge when to hit your thrusters to (a) not hit the trigger_hurt and (b) still have energy to get all the way back out. (:

Jetpacks regenerate fully in about 15 seconds... they can be used to fly for maybe 10 seconds. Numbers are a guess based on very little time; I may be way off.

One thing they *can't* do is give you horizontal accelleration (which the Giants jets did do) - they only affect vertical speed.

so how much control to you have over forward and lateral motion whilst airborne? or do you have to aim the jetpack by hitting the jets while running in the direction you want to go?
• NecroNecro <insert non-birthday-related title here> Join Date: 2002-08-09 Member: 1118Members
sounds good!

i agree about the no horizontal speed cause otherwise ppl would jetpack across the level...kind of like bunnyhopping...in a way
• ViPrViPr Resident naysayer Join Date: 2002-10-17 Member: 1515Members
errr what's wrong with jet-packing across the level? what's the point in having the jet-pack then? anyway you can't really jet-pack across the level coz most of the spaces are too tight and you would injure yourself if you banged into something too hard i'm assuming.

isn't there some air control and won't it be like the air control in quake3 or unreal tournament because the air control in half-life is bizarre.

the point of jetpacking isnt to get across the map as fast as possible (unless ur playing flaytona ) but to get high, away from aliens and to otherwise unaccessible areas
• ViPrViPr Resident naysayer Join Date: 2002-10-17 Member: 1515Members
well jet-packs in real life could be used to travel faster horizontally, so it's not cheating. anyway it's not really gonna happen so much coz controlling the jetpack is probably gonna be a bit tricky so you'll keep on bumping into things with these indoor levels. anyway what's wrong in having a speed advantage with the jet-pack if you're skilled with using it? if you work hard enough to get the better equipment then you're supposed to be rewarded with an advantage right?

RIght, since most aliens are ground- dwelling, a vertical advantage could be very useful.

For Q's on how much you can control your movement in the air, Go creat a HL(or CS) server, set the gravity to -200, once you start rising try moving around, thats probably the same amout of lateral control, HL's default air movement.

Not *quite* that poor. Generally speaking, though, the jetpack is only used for "hops". You don't spend a sustained amount of time airborne; you don't have the energy for it.
• DreadDread Join Date: 2002-07-24 Member: 993Members
Could someone please tell me more about that lerk hitting wall? I asked about it earlier in this thread.

"bind MOUSE2 "impulse 107"" in NSTR2.

:-D Teheheeeheheheehe

I was kind of looking forward to flying through Bast superman-style like in Giants.

X-D

*Dread*: I would imagine you would lose all forward momentum and would have to flap to stay aloft.

Can heavy armour mount the jetpack?
• outerfroggy1outerfroggy1 Join Date: 2002-10-01 Member: 1401Members
Nope, you can have either heavy armor OR the jetpack, but not both.
• GwahirGwahir Join Date: 2002-04-24 Member: 513Members, Constellation
which makes sense, imagine trying to use a jetpack with limited energy on something as heavy as HA, probably give you a little spring in your step at best.
• ViPrViPr Resident naysayer Join Date: 2002-10-17 Member: 1515Members
how about if you can have both but since the heavy armor has more mass then you'll notice the jetpack's thrust force is a lot less effective with it? and how about if you can get different powers of jetpacks also. that would be cool. maybe that will be done in future versions

does the jetpack make any loud noises such as FRRGRRRR or just a soft hum (mmmmmmmmm)

and does it make the screen shake when you are using it? or is smooth?
• SurgeSurge asda4a3sklflkgh Join Date: 2002-07-14 Member: 944Members
So is there a seperate button for the jetpack? Is it realistic, like, you don't hover with it? Or does it just snap on when you try to jump in mid-air?
