The interesting thing about this is it does not say ANYWHERE that its the Special Editions. If it isn't, I will be soo freaking happy. :D
Even Starwars.com doesn't specifically say they are the Special Editions! :D

It says "Digitally Mastered" on the box.

uh.....should i call upon babelfish to help me with the linkeh?
God, does it own. Thanks for the linkeh!
He added crap into the movie that wasn't in the first, sometimes completely changing the meaning of the scene. And also the added stuff usually looked pretty fake.
Pristine case that pisses off most people:
"Greedo shooting first"
In the original Star Wars, when Han is at the bar and is confronted by Greedo (who had yet to acquire a 386) Greedo is holding him at gunpoint and Han sits back down and casually unholsters his blaster and shoots Greedo dead.
In the Special Edition, before Han fires they duplicated the frame before it a couple times and greedo fires a shot and the entire screen is stillframe sans the blaster bolt. Its incredibly choppy and just looks bad.
Also there's the Jabba The Hutt scene added that ruins a lot of the tension and mystery surrounding Hans character and why he is in debt and whatnot. That and the obvious fact that the Jabba Han talks to is like 500 pounds less the one in ROTJ and is blatently CG. Yes I know the scene was originally PLANNED but it wasn't in the final product, so it shouldn't have been in the Special Edition.
There's some other stuff like making Mos Eisley some giant bustling city vs. a dangerous looking hive of scum and villany. Sure it was nifty when it was all "ohh aww brand new technology!" but now it just seems like special effects for the sake of special effects.
In ROTJ less ewoks die (including some of the ones I enjoyed watching die the most!) and they completely bastardized the ending celebration by removing the classic ewok "yub yub" music and replacing it with some new age crap that doesn't even sync up with what the people are dancing to, nor does it fit the theme of the rest of the soundtrack. Its like watching an action movie and all of a sudden they finish up a KoRn track with Celiene Dion...
Empire Strikes back was actually pretty good w/ the Special Edition though, at least as far as I remember...
I just wish they'd offer like, both versions on DVD, with the ability to "turn off" the special edition extra crap if you wanted.
I mean I'm all for the CG-ifying of the space battles and removing of the wires on Tie Fighters and etc, that part is all good. But changing what actually happens to be more "with the times" is bad. Like when Stephen Spielburg had the guns removed from the scientists hands in ET. Just stupid. :X
Han's an opportunistic ****, plain and simple. He's in it for himself, which makes his actions by the end of the trilogy that much cooler because it's going against his nature. Lucas made Greedo shoot first so Han could be a more "Hollywood-esque" good-guy. It's not fashionable to kill, and extremely unfashionable to kill in cold blood. When was the last time you saw a villain die at the hands of the hero? When was the last time you saw a villain die of some external factor, leaving the hero's hands clean? Yeah, that's what I thought.
The other problem with it is that Han doesn't even react to the blaster shot. Yeah, you could say he's that cool, but come on. *Anyone* flinches when somebody shoots at their head. And why the heck would Greedo miss a stationary target just 4 feet away?!
but we can all agree on the fact that the two new episodes are mostly crap, and are really made for 8 year olds. which is kind of sad considering the mini series which was on cartoon network seemed more professional
That's because it was. Go read some Lucas interviews... :/

I pray to god this is the original versions...

Hey, Jabba the Hutt was SUPPOSED to be a lot skinnier in A New Hope. He wasn't up "Full Crime Boss Super Bad" status yet, and as hutt power and influence grows, they get fatter and more grotesque. It's all in the Official Guide to Alien Species.
Also, Mos Eisley is fine either way you look at it. It might have been CG for the sake of CG, but it certainly doesn't detract at all, and it's nice seeing swoops or something onscreen for once instead of having to read about them in the EU.
Worst thing about modern cinema, EVER.
That and the fact that films more & more cater to the lowest common denominator, I.E The slowest person in the room.
The other one I always use is 'The Great Escape'. If that film was remade now, you *know* they'd change the end. (not spoilering, if you've never seen this great Steve McQueen film, go now!) It's the end that makes it great cinema.
Incidentally, I really won't go into Star Wars, as I am a Grade A Background NERD, and might embarass myself.
17 and 18 are by far my favorite... they just updated it with 19, and 20 should be today or tomorrow I think...
*Edit*
My logic behind episodes 1-3 sucking is that, while its actually little known, George Lucas did NOT direct the first trilogy, merely an executive producer and he wrote the story. He DID direct 1-3, though.

They were perfectly happy with the films they had grown up with (who cares if Greedo shot first?), and thus disappointed by Lucas's decision to make the special editions the only versions available on DVD. Still, the Star Wars trilogy was one of the last remaining DVD Holy Grails, and only the most stubborn critics won't welcome its release. --David Horiuchi

Makes me so mad... why not do the original?
So back a few years ago, Lucas released a "Digitally Remastered, THX Edition", all he did was clean up the picture and the sound, and it was good.
Later, he released the Special Editions adding this extra, awkward scenes, and messing around w/ the whole thing.
I did enjoy that they were released into the theatres, but they are certainly not the edition I'd want to own.
Being THX mastered is basicaly "Set mode +pwnage!". They remaster the sound and visuals to look really really good, as if the film was just made, rather than looking like 25 year old worn away film...

Things are looking on the up and up as being the non-ream-me-in-the-arse-version....
Though I suppose we'll know minutes after the 1st Star Wars nerd gets it home and jumps to the Han Solo scene....
The reason it don't say Special Edition on the box is because the Originals no longer exist in Lucas' mind. The Special Editions are the ONLY versions which came out, EVER. Anything you have heard to the contrary is lies. Listen to the voice of the la-li-lu-le-lo.

17 was hilarious...Watching that trooper fly through the air as the other has his back turned on patrol...I couldnt stop laughing...

That sounds exactly like the kind of thing that **** would do, he has absolutely no respect for fans.
