Making A Window Soundproof?

BeastBeast Armonkyi Join Date: 2003-04-21 Member: 15731Members, Constellation

Make the noises stop...... X.x
OK, So I live next to a Motorway (UK Equivilent of a faster Highway).
It's noisy.
It sucks.
Usually I can deal with it, sometimes I can't. Sometimes it's noisier than other times, like now. Double glazing isn't much help, and the noise problem seems to be getting worse. Which is why I'm up at 6am posting this because of it. I've tried other rooms in the house, same deal, same noise.

So... How can I make this window in my room soundproof or something, without buying triple glazing? Any tricks? Ideas? I need my sleep x.x

Thanks for helping in advance.

Just try putting lots of pillows up against the window. Soft, non-reflective objects absorb sound.

Best advice I can offer is to get earplugs, Although they may be hard to get used to as well.

Another more active solution is to make sure your damn tired when you hit the sack, run laps or something (I use to)

rubber sheets are soundproof for the most part, but you probably arn't intrested in the whole "rubber walls" look

Well, you could end up just getting a pair of heavy blankets, stitch 'em together and stuff it with cotton batting. Then put it up against the window at night. Makeshift soundproof batting. Otherwise... shell out for the triple-glazing. :b

Are you sure it isn't just coming through the walls?

Alternately (and more expensively) put up a soundwall if you're on the ground floor. Cinderblocks, rebar, and concrete will help cut down a good bit.

Personally, I'd just get some sealed headphones and listen to music.

Only way you'll get rid of the noise is to either move, or build suspended walls/floors/ceilings, with sealed doorways. The noise will be mostly transmitted through the walls and floor.

Also, check your loft to see if the eaves are sealed up. Quite a bit of noise can get in through there, although you MUST have ventilation in your loft.

White noise generators, in-ear phones connected to a CD player, or earplugs.

Well, like Maveric said, I would just get some heavy weapons or explosives and wipe out all traffic. Just put some heavy duty C4 under the roadbed and detonate it from your house. The highway goes boom and the noise stops.

It really depends on the sound you're dealing with. If most of the sound is high pitched, then blankets and rubber mats will help. But if you're dealing with lower pitched sound, you'll need to a build a room within a room with lots of sound insulation, which can be a lot of trouble.

I heard padded cells have GREAT sound insulation....but bad windows.

But if you must, you might really have to buy triple glazed windows to help with the problem.

BTW, I live in almost the same location, except I'm in Hong Kong, and I don't have double-glazed windows.

But I'm really up for padding everywhere though, preferably cotton padding encased in leather.

Build a noise barrier. They're usually 6 to 12 feet tall, and made of concrete. Or just use rocks; lots and lots of piled rocks. Or start a petition to have the city build one.
