with alla the codecs?
to elaborate: i'm sick and tired of WMP's advertising - they have enough money that they, of all people, shouldn't need it.

and i've realized that i'm using everything BUT the provided windows applications. (opera, trillian, irfanview, etc.)

so, fire away, fellas!!!

edit: preciate the help =D

    There's only one answer.

    Windows Media Player Classic

It has full support for any .avi / .mpeg codec you can throw at it, and also support for Real and Quicktime media.

Personally i just use Windows Media Player 9, purely because i don't want nor need Realplayer or Quicktime, but i will definately suggest using WMPC for your all-in-one media playing needs.

WMP with the "Nimo Codec" (google it) and QuickTime has proved itself very worthy.
Though being a media junker, I have every other player, though I use WMP and Winamp the most.

I personally prefer vlc. I've found it can play just about anything you throw at it. Even partially corrupted files. In general (unless its in a proprietary format) if vlc can't play it, nothing can.

Just a note that media player classic doesnt support all codecs out of the box, you'll need to download them separately. A good place to start would be ffdshow which will take care of your divx and xvid needs and probably some more. For the quicktime stuff you'll want Quicktime alternative and for the Realplayer stuff, Real Alternative. Another good one to get would be support for windows media 9 files if you don't have it (wmv files), I think this link should help you out there. After that, if you find a file you cant play, run it through G-Spot and see if it can identify the codec you need.
    Good luck

That and of course Quicktime. Yes it's Windows Media Player, but it's not Media Borg. It's nice and plain. I think quicktime speaks for itself though.

I agree, VLC is certainly a damn nice proggy. Dunno about the WIN32 version. MPlayer is ofcourse a nice program, I think it has WIN32 support but I'm not sure.

Ok, from my experience with video codecs... do NOT install a codec pack. As mentioned above, they will screw over a few games. Such as Silent Hill 3 which is broken due to the ACE codec pack.

Download G-Spot, as mentioned above, and only download and install what codecs you need. G-Spot will tell you the exact details of what codec you need, then it's just a simple case of googling it and installing it. Rarely takes over a minute.

Sure, codec packs seem like a good idea, but chances are you won't ever use a fraction of the codecs and utils they come with, and chances are they will break something. I've had problems with ACE, Nimo and Kazaa Lite codec pack. I mean, sure, if you need countless amounts of junk you'll never use, install them.......

mplayer is the best by a long shot but only on linux... the win32 version seems a little picky, though it could just be my totally wrecked windows XP =s

I find WMPC pretty good though every now and then I'll find a file that it doesn't like. They're few and far between but it's annoying when it happens -.-

I'm gonna give vlc a shot now =D

Personally, if you're just looking for the most commonly used codecs, install the basic K-Lite Codec Pack. Leave it on default settings, don't install any AC3 codecs if you're worried about screwing sound up. I've never had a problem, personally. You might not, either.
