<div class="IPBDescription">It Returns</div> I did this model back in Feb, but the .max got corrupted somehow, so I redid it today. Based on a concept Drake posted a looong time ago in a thread far far away.

I might just learn to skinmesh for this one, but I have, in the past, sucked at skinning.

    i dont think its beefy enough for a welder.. but id probably try it, being the weld monkey that i am... i demand sexisfaction!

    i think this was supposed to be designed as a easy to carry compact welder so it being thin is good

    well I also think the grip is a bit to thin. but the rest is ok.

    very good model after all <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    i have never seen a WIP thread without this comment...

    the abillity to fix this problem is SOO easy that i hate these sort of comments... if he gets the hand in there... he'll probably scale the weapon to the hand... then it won't be too thin...

    it would take like 45 seconds to fix, and wouldn't mess up anything... </rant>
  • funbagsfunbags Join Date: 2003-06-08 Member: 17099Members
    but it needs to be said, maybe he wont scale it. i hate thin models.
  • Dorian_GrayDorian_Gray Join Date: 2004-02-15 Member: 26581Members, Constellation
    Yeah I'll scale it when I get the hand in there, and that will cover up most of the handle, so I probably won't mess with that too much.

    walking through the hallway at school, wishing i had a welder, i came up with (what i think) is a cool idea for this model.

    Instead of just having hte independent gun-welder, perhaps a tube-wire-thingy, that runs from where the clip would be , if this was a real pistol, to a teminal, left hand held box thing, perhaps with like.. a little meter.. or a monitor thing...

    id draw it.. but im on a scool garbage mac, that has no graphic design software... i might get on the windows emulator, and doodle it in paint.

    i can make a cool text thing

    Hey, that's pretty cool! Like you hold that with your left hand? (Although I hope it'll be a bit smaller than pictured)

    Okay I'm gonna thicken the handle and then add the little handheld box thing, but I think I should actually do the homework that I've been putting off for 4 days now <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> I'll try to get this done today, but if not, tomorrow for sure,

    Yes I do have to agree, but my teachers seem to think otherwise <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Okay, I did a quick little pad thing, with a 5 min photoshop screen on it... I'm going to add buttons on the top, and obviously make that crappy-colored pipe/cable thing look half-decent when I get hands in the model.

    <img src='http://dorian.carpe-noctem.ca/models/welder_pad_1.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    Edit: My idea for the anims is to have the little white markers dance a little bit when the welder is idle (and have the flow readings indicate 0) and to have them do something logical when the welder is in use. Also, in the draw animation, maybe have the screen flicker a few times then come on.

    lol as a joke why dont you make one of those portable welder supply thingies. The big box that the real welders connect to. THAT would be funny.

    also why dont u have the screen with the indicators on the welder? just make it smaller.

    then in the other hand you can take a pair of goggles and hold them over your eyes <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    if you dont do it, ill try, and fail

    (edit) can you put things close up in front of the player's veiw? Then you could put a little transparent screen on the goggles and you could see through them!

    if you did this I would love you forever

    AFAIK I can't do a HUD (heads up display) type thing because, as I understand additive textures, they have to be a solid color on the skin, and therefore can't use something like this screen. The only way I can see doing this would be to physically model a little bar with a gradient texture inside the screen iteself and have other little boxes going around on it... that could actually look kinda cool, a 3d HUD. Hrm... I may have just given myself an idea <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Edit: (I seem to edit way too many posts) Only problem would be the text...
  • GodhandGodhand Join Date: 2003-08-02 Member: 18737Members
    perhaps, (it might be a bit complicated, but for the weldy anim, he could fiddle with knobs, or push buttons.. kinda a touch lcd doolie?

    you could put the text on the goggles or on a mini-screen right on top of the welder. In the goggles would be cooler tho, if you can do it. Can you change skins in animations? if not make a bunch of the screens but each on slightly changed (like a gif) and put them offscreen where he cant see them, then pull them in for each animation (you can also attack them to bones). Same thing is done with the grenade launcher reload where the nades are hidden offscreen.

    <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    (edit) and an lcd where he pushes buttons that dont do anything would be cool also.

    (edit)(edit) do em both! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    (edit)(edit)(edit) make the lcd buttons correspond with the things he sees on the HUD like when he pushes different buttons different levels change.

    (edit)(edit)(edit)(edit) edit!

    I don't think I can make the actual LCD thing translucent (the bits with different colors and stuff on them). I've never skinned anything, so I'm not sure about the whole "hiding offscreen" bit though.

    Anyways, here's a slight update. The pad with some buttons and a scroll-y whell in the bottom left. The welder has some little buttons and a dial on the side, as per the concept now. If anyone knows the answer to menohack's suggestion... that does sound cool.

    <img src='http://dorian.carpe-noctem.ca/models/welder_3.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
    <img src='http://dorian.carpe-noctem.ca/models/welder_pad_2.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    Edit: The scroll wheel is black, encased in that white box btw. Hard to see.
