Gamespy Review
Man, this has gotta be one of the reasons I love Gamespy. They gave Far Cry 4 out of 5 stars. I personally would give it 3 OR 4, but still, at least they aren't screaming OH EM GEE BEST GAME EVAR at the top of their lungs like others. Their complains:

The RIDICULOUS system requirements.

The RIDICULOUS difficulty.

The RIDICULOUS voice acting.

The RIDICULOUS story.

And while I thought the A.I. was a bit too serious, they gave me a rather good point, in my opinion: There is a good chance that maybe I just approached each level wrong. I have to admit, I'm the type of guy that when I'm given a m4, I think its time to rock and roll(unless its a tac shooter. Believe me, I'm not JUST a run n gunner, I've got both likings). Not to mention, what tac like shooter has mutated monkeys jumping at you? My point exactly.

I think I may pick this up just because of the replay value, and the fact it'll be a great way to test my system, but thank the Lord for Gamespy and their balls.

I personally love how difficult it is. Unless 'Hard' is more difficult then 'Realistic', this game's difficulty is perfect for what it is. The engine does scale a lot, but the problem is on lower systems it'll run ok, but will look like utter crap. Not like UT2004 where it looks decent on anything. I also found the whole "omgz monsters" element to be pretty refreshing in a game as strategic as this. The voice acting I can agree with though, it's pretty laughable.

Well, I'll be honest: All I ever played is the demos. But my thing is, is if your demo sucks, your game can't be much better, though I've been proven wrong on a few games, and this one I've been told wrong, but not proven yet.

The biggest thing I have wrong with it is, my PC isn't your general "Lackluster PC". I've got 1280mb of DDR RAM, A GeForce FX 5600 256mb, and a P4 2.0ghz(the weak part). I've got a sound card too, a Audigy 2, which eliminates my sound problems that would go to processor. And will the game is probably processor intensive: I would expect my graphics card to run it at a minimum of ALL medium settings, with no mouse lag, and the such. Maybe they should have a option for that.

I'm thinking of buying Far Cry tommorow. From what I hear Quaunaut, Far Cry will prove you wrong, as apparently performance and AI are much more impressive in the final version of the game.

i have farcry.. and you would think.. the story is terrible. but it really isnt.. when u learn how and why the tensiends are like that... and then they get ALOT bigger then just monkey size.. it is a awesome game...

the high specs, whats wrong with that? i pay alot.. cos i play alot. sounds fair to me.

the voice acting is cheesy with intent i think...

and it isnt hard... there are times to sneak up with mp5 and machete.. and there there is times to use your deagle and p90 and go crazy... dont play it in one way.. adapt!

I'm kinda like quanaut, I usually judge stuff off the demos and Farcry seemed pretty dismal from it, but from the endless amounts of praise I'm starting to wonder... the problem is I still don't want to buy it =P

I can't think of a worse game. It exploits the fact people are willing to choose eye candy over gameplay. I suppose if you like eye candy more then its good. I also have a GOOD computer. Sure my graphics card is a bit dated but apparently an Athlon XP 2700+ isn't good enough for mister Far Cry. So GG to that.

Borowed from a friend, been playing it atm...

    Not to impresed, my takes:

    1) The Physics engine is not used (thus making me sorta sore, after all thats one of the big calling points of the next gen games)

    2) The Graphix honestly are not all that amasing, this might be b/c I had to turn down alot of stuff for it to run smoothly (amd 1.1gig cpu, 512 sdram, Geforce 4 Ti 4200, SBLive)

    3) I am playing through on normal, and it is mostly possible to just run n gun.
You admitadly can't pull a HL and just run in, shoot everything and go on. Generaly I find a decent piece of cover, snipe off as many as I can, and the semi sneak up on the rest and finish them off with the p90 (or shotgun).

However, I just got to one of the 'big turning points', and this just got silly. They seem to expect you to know exactly when to go into tac shooter mode and when to go into WASTE EM ALL!!!!!

And honestly enugh, I don't like stealth/tac shooters (thus why I play one normal )

Sounds interesting, it is difficult because it is hard to beat the enemies right? It is not difficult because you have to be a psychic and guess the one obscure way the developers came up with to complete each segment like hitman, or even worse, because a lot of evil little bugs and inconsistencies conspire against you or it's all just a random crap shoot?

errrr, im not really sure why people are complaining about the sys requirements??? I ran both demos on all the highest detail setttings and its ran beautifully, no stalls, bad renders or unexplainable lag, and my system is only as follows

    AmdXP 2600+
    512 PC3200 DDR dual channel
    Asus Nforce2 Motherboard
GeForce Ti 4200 Ultra 128mb DDR

it ran like a dream, and i kinda liked it, think i might pick it up

I've also played only the demo, but the voice acting sounded... bad. When I heard the line in the end of the demo: "That's not good. What the hell do we do now?", I thought:

I dont think the system requirements are high at all. Its a next-gen game. Its a DX9 game. What do people expect. Technologies advance. This is just an example. Your PC may have been top of the line when you bought it, but its not always going to run everything the greatest. Heck, my system can't even run this game at highest detail

    AMD AthlonXP 2500+ @ 2.28Ghz
    1024mb Ram PC3000
    Radeon 9800Pro 128mb

FarCry is very CPU intensive. If anything, thats whats limiting 90% of people out there. I play 1280x1024 (because native resolution on my LCD monitor) and settings on medium (except water quality which is very high and texture quality very high) and it runs great. You want quality, be prepared to pay for it.

Please ignore the demos before deciding wether or not to buy this game.
They don't do the game justice. at all!

The graphics are insanely good, leveldesign is top notch (varied, multiple 'solutions'/paths to areas), you can sneak around through the bushes and avoid enemies or you can burst in guns ablaze. I like the weaponsytem (halo-ish), the AI is .. unique (more flock AI like) and the cheesey voice acting could be a whole lot worse.
btw, did I mention the great graphics? good. I'll mention them again. =D

buy this game today, your computer will <3 you for it.

Does anyone remember the times when you -couldn't- run games maxed out on anything but the cutting edge (sometimes not released yet) hardware? Those times have returned. Hardware is no longer years ahead of games, games are now pushing hardware. Games are tossing out incredible graphical effects and level of detail, and just because you can't run it at 1600x1200 with 4x FSAA and all effects maxed out doesn't mean it's a crap game. I saw a terrific mention in ShackNews discussion on something like this, but of course I can hardly do it justice.

Far Cry's biggest strength as a game is that it gives you about as much freedom as it can while still being a story-driven FPS. You're limited in what you can do, but damned if I knew that. You can practically bypass entire levels if you take the time to think ahead, or you can go in guns blazing to a fantastic firefight. Now I'm not going to claim it as the best game ever, but criticizing the gameplay is near impossible because it can be whatever you want it to be. If you want run and gun, you're in for a hell of a fight. If you're want to be smart about things, you're going to have a field day using everything at your disposal to do it. -That- is why I love this game.

Also, in regards to the physics comment - physics doesn't have to be 'used' to be an effective part of the game. It adds to the overall experience regardless - would you rather the barrels stay in one place or bodies hang over ledges while still lying horizontal?

To be honest I think people should stop toting 'graphics' as something to care about in a game... I dunno about you guys but I expect good graphics now, lack of good graphics is something I'd be bothered about (note that graphics aren't necessarily technology either, some of the old 2D stuff is still beautiful ^^ ).

I dont know where the gameplay>graphics came in, Far Cry has both. If it was just another graphics show I would've stopped playing long ago. Graphics do matter, even if by a small amount. Gameplay is most important, but the prettyness adds a lot to atmosphere and the initial "wow" factor.

Gameplay is always more important than Graphics, but a lack of both is still bad. I mean after all, if graphics meant NOTHING then we'd all be playing text based games still...

The Demos don’t even come close to the actual game. Like I mentioned in the other thread this game is a Very polished shooter. It has elements in it for any type of gamer. You can go in guns blazing on easy and medium. Or you can treat it like a stealth/MGS type game on Hard and Realistic (with auto AI balance) This game deserves 4/5 it just falls short of the "go out right fing now and buy it" mark. But trust me this game has set the bar for other shooters. Did anyone pay attention to the bump mapping in the first Carrier? It was on the torpedoes, very freakin cool.

Don't get me wrong Squirrel and everyone else: I LOVE IT that games are requiring the cutting edge these days. What I hate, is that, I DO HAVE THE CUTTING EDGE, AND IT WON'T RUN. Thats my biggest problem with the thing and its terrible performance.
  • GreyPawsGreyPaws Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8659Members
Umm.. what do you mean by cutting edge? I'm runnng a p4 2.6 (533 FSB) with 512 pc1033 RDRAM (533) an asus Geforce 4 128meg (not cutting edge)

I'm running the game in 1024x768 with everything on VERY High and it runs 98% lag free. (it lags for a sec or two when I'm driving really fast and shooting)

I just finished the single player game today... The ending was a bit short, but otherwise I thought this was a great game. What really shocked me was the lighting, I would stop and watch the lights swing for 10 min at a time... WOW what an amazing game.

I really want to like this game, but I am turned off by the fact that I get an average of 30-40fps on a Athlon XP Barton 2800+, 1gb PC 3200 DDR, and 9800PRO card at 1024x768, 32bit color, no FSAA, AF. Medium-High detail levels. AND, it has graphical glitches.

The game ran BETTER on my brothers AMD 1600+, 512mb ram, GF4 Ti4400, although it glitched very badly.

And yes, I am using the latest drivers.

Its all marketting. A company partners with a specific vendor, and the game runs like crap unless they go buy the NEWEST hardware available.

Look at HL2, it will be the best game, gameplay wise, and graphically, but run on a crappy old 700mhz system.

Far Cry, to me, Is like Halo. Subpar performance on GOOD machines isn't a turn on.

I am running at 800 x 600 with most of the eye candy turned on or at least at medium and I don't have much problems.

As far as quality, I really like this game, it has a decent story line, there are places you have to kill, but then there are others where you can bypass half the guards and just go to where you need to go.

The moving barrels, the ragdoll physics, the immense areas, the dynamic lighting, the effort at giving the public a SDK that is user friendly and usefull.

Overall I really like this game!
