I don't think I've ever watched something as funny as everyone going into applause after hearing "He's casting fuzzy dynamic shadow volumes onto the level". Yeah! Go fuzzy shadows go!

Edit: I would love to see the benchmarks on that U3 showcase demo.

umm i dont like unreal

hl2 has got the storyline, the physics, the AI... basically, the non-"hey lets play quake until everybody gets bored... then make another one with more polygons!"

no point getting excited about unreal tournament, or whatever else is coming out from the same thing. its all crap in my opinion

..what is unreal 2's "storyline"?? [multiplayer doesn't count].

eeediot, the unreals(well first one) had good storylines, unreal tournyment, well, i wouldnt call that a great story line, and can you seriously say that unreal has bad AI, well its not great, but cmon, half life didnt even have bots, and the ones it does have are generally crap, granted, i think UT came out a lil while after hl. but IMHO it makes it a good game if i **** my pants when i saw that.

/edit granted i wont be able to run either half life 2 or this game for a couple of years, which i think is a bad thing, because if all of these companies are releasing these games, and no one has the comp to play it, they are hurting their own buisness. (thats why UT2004 kicks ****, its playable with a geforce... and fun as hell)

Unreal isn't going to be a game where you just run and gun, most fps games aren't like that anymore. and you sound like some hl2 fanboy fanatic who would defend hl2 to the death and yeah...

I think he said that, but it dosent mean what I think it wasnt supposed to mean. Or something like that.

HL2 is going to have some advantages when its released, but yeah, the engine is already getting dated. If it had been released in September, it would have utterly destroyed any competing graphics engine. Its a bit tainted now, but I still think with all the mod support, will really push it ahead. Just from what I've heard about mapping for Doom 3, it will be a nightmare compared to developing content for HL or HL2.

I would just rather wait till one of these "omg uber l33t better than <insert game>" games gets released so we can really put them to the test. You also have to remember, HL2 is likely going to be released sooner than Unreal 3, and hopefully before Doom 3, and each engine has its own merit. Doom 3 has cinematic graphics, HL2 has a mod focus, and we havent seen enough of Unreal 3 to know what the engine will be like.

I think what will really pull HL2 is the range of systems it supposedly will be able to run on. I mean, they even said in the Unreal3 demo that only now is there a card that can even run it at a playable rate.. let alone use most of its features. HL2 on the other hand will hopefully look fairly good and run on generally any computer from the last 3 or 4 years. HL2 is aimed in the right direction. That direction, being now. right now, not everyone has a ultra high end computer. The "average joe" has a mid to mid-high range computer. HL2 aims to run on mid to mid-high range computers. A wise choice, appealing to the masses.

Unreal3 is aimed at the future. With only 1 videocard that could run it moderately, and correct me if I'm mistaken, but its not even out yet! Yeah, it looks great, but inorder to run it you need a $600 card that isn't even out yet, takes up two slots and would probably require a new powersupply to run the damned thing. Unreal3 is hardly aimed at present computers. by the time "Average joe" has a system to run Unreal3, Well, lets just say they'll finally be able to by UT2008..

the HL2 hardware survey showed that there are a good number of people running Geforce2 MX and 4 MX, with processors in the 1 to 2.5 ghz range. HL2 aims to be able to run on these systems, and lower. Unreal3 would cripple these computers and p*** on their graves.

Of course, the points you brought up are quite valid.. No one likes engines that are hard to mod/map for..
Unless of course the base set of content is really damned good.
Hopefully HL2 will be moddable, mappable and have kick **** single player

What I mean is that 3-5 years from now, games will start using mid to high poly. Its craaazy. low poly will be out.

Low poly will never be out, although what is classed as low and high will change...
There will always be "lower-end" machines and general optimization helps in the long run.. Being wasteful with polygons is never a good idea..

This engine is for somewhere within the next 2 and a half years, not right now. It uses displacement mapping... so even if it was released as a game it would be impossible to run at above 3 fps on any current system (unless you spend $6000 on it).

Yeah. Its probably Unreal Warfare: The MMOFPS that Epic's been wanting to make. Basically a combo of UT's fun and the Unreal series' story(story to U2 if you were too stupid to pay attention: Several artifacts were left behind from a ancient alien race, and while 3 company's are trying to get them for whatever reason, you too are trying just to figure out why and to stop the companies. I'd tell more, but spoilers abound.)

it doesnt look that impressive

bump mapping.. been done
high poly models.. been done
dynamic lighting.. been done
all that mirror/color shiznit.. yep, been done
crappy audience that laughs when they hear a comparisson between a -1 year old game and a 5 year old game.. even thats been done

the only thing im expecting in this game is a single player storyline and giving money to my local hardware store.

bump/normal mapping - been done, now adds displacement mapping, which takes that a step further than ever before.
high poly models - raw polycounts ~3x greater than much of Doom3, not counting the source polycounts which are even beyond that (2-6 million polys? eep!)
Dynamic lighting - been done, never effectively with real-time soft ("fuzzy") shadowing, creating one of the two biggest complaints of game engines like this - pure black shadowing.
mirror/color "shiznit" - been done, now being done with a pixel shader architecture not previously available, opening the door to countless effects that previous engines couldn't even do.

Could just as well say "polygons? Yep. Those have been done." - doesn't change the fact that they're being done far better than anything on the market right now

And will someone remind eediot that this is for the Unreal Engine and not the game itself? Doesn't matter what you think of the Unreal series, there's a whole realm of licensing options available for other companies to make games you might actually like on this tech
