Hands And Bones In Max

<div class="IPBDescription">The hand bone's connected to the...</div> Okay my immense n00bishness at HL modelling comes through once again. I have my model. Its a welder, so I decompiled v_welder.mdl and imported welder_ref.smd, to get hands. Now, when I delete the welder that comes with the hands, the skin modifier gets all messed up and the bones aren't linked to the verticies. Do I have to re-do the skin modifier on the entire mesh, or is there a simpler way to do this? I could experiment, but given my free time, that might take a looooong time. I just don't want to have to re-link each and every single bone in the hand to the mesh... that would be a royal pain in the you-know-what.
