I've just bought Fallout/Fallout 2 on a compilation CD. I've never played this before. Looking forwad to it. Any hints/tips for a newbie without specific spoilers ?
dont bother looking at the storyline as strict "this is the only way to be played" rules
follow your every whim... see a blonde girl who gives you some lip? take out a shotgun and kill her in front of the entire bar
you'll die quite a few times, especially at the start, but just load up whatever saved game you had and keep playing on
Yes you have to find the water chip. But along the way, feel free to do what you please. You are given a lot of time to do it. Just dont wander around the wasteland needlessly.
reference to the slight spoiler.. skip this post if you are insanely jealous of any sized surprises...
well it depends. if you want to follow the storyline and finish the game the way the plot intended, sure you need the waterchip. if you just want to continue going around having fun, DO IT. become the baddest cowboy in the 7 irradiated deserts, killing every single person you cross. random wandering merchants are FUN

I mean come on, that place had so much character you were wading in it before you even finished loading the map and all of it was adult themed with the drug pushers , mafiosos, the porn studio, the hookers and the drunk priest.
Did you look at what goes into an average cartoon lately? New Reno, maybe minus one to two dialogue options, could be put into a game that tries to be 'family friendly'. I should know, because I played the German version of F2, which was edited.

A lucky few managed to escape to the safety of the vaults. For the whole of your life, this has been your home.
That is about to change....

-Excerpt from Fallout's intro.
To make a long story short, the 3rd world war hit earth a few years from now. Almost all life was wiped out. A few people managed to escape the nuclear holocaust by going into 'vaults' - massive underground structues that were totally self-contained. You were born in one of these vaults, and have never seen the world outside. Then something goes wrong.
In FO1, your vault constantly recycles it's water, so that none has to be brought in from the outside world. Now, the chip that controlls this water purification has died. You need to go find a replacement. And this starts you on one of the greatest RPGs of all time...
But Fallout isn't supposed to be "family friendly", it is a harsh tale about survival in a post nuclear apocolyptic world, where violence and bloodshed are law. Sure, you could make an editied version for the little kids out there, but make an unedited version for the grownups who like the dark, gritty, dirty world that is Fallout. The game shows a world where if you have a problem, not only can you talk it out, you can blow a hole in the other persons side if you really want to. Leave the family friendly games to EA....
(even if it is family friendly, I would buy it anyway)
edit* Fallout Bible, if you have played the games and have some questions, more than likely they will be in here. The timeline in #0 is really nice to read too. It tells of the events leading up to the games.

Ineptplay is about to crash and burn.
Which will mean that there is no fallout 3. No money to make projects, you cannot do anything.
I guess they can go down in history as an example of how to complete disassociate your fans and slowly bleed yourself to death.
GG Ineptplay.
