Computer Upgrade
<div class="IPBDescription">look please</div> I currently have a 9800XT, 2 sticks of 512mb DDR400 (I want to put in dual channel), 3 hard drives (Running off of a 80gig 7200rpm Western Digital).
I was going to purchase these:
*<a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-449&depa=1' target='_blank'>Motherboard</a>
*<a href='http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-174&depa=1' target='_blank'>Proccessor</a>
My current Motherboard and CPU cannot handle my current ram and video card.
Should I go with this cpu and mobo?
Thanks.
EDIT: btw, I do not plan on overclocking.

2) get an athlon 64 with a MSI NEO FIS2R mobo or an ASUS something
3) if you have to get a p4 dont get a prescott (2.8c instead of 2.8e)
4) taco
I'd also suggest going for the R9800 Pro... $300 cheaper than the baseline XT, and only slightly worse performance.
DDR400 is the only bet for max performance when running an Ath64.. I'd go for PC3200, or 4000 if you can splurge.
And whatever you do, DON'T TOUCH the nForce3 chipset. It's the laughingstock of all available sets, getting up to 25% worse performance than the next-fastest. VIA K8T800 is the way to go.
And Talesin, can you link the product your talking about?
<a href='http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket754/k8v-d/overview.HTM' target='_blank'>ASUS K8V Deluxe</a>
<a href='http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_9485_9487,00.html' target='_blank'>AMD's Ath64 Page</a>
And now to find decent prices... screw NewEgg. Pricewatch!
BZBoys has the K8V Deluxe for $134, or Spartan has the MSI K8TNEO-FSR (another top contender, beats the K8V sometimes) for $115.
Ath64 3000 runs for $210, but you can get 'em cheaper. The 3200+ is $262.
Better deals are the bundles... Sonicparts will do an MSI NEO and 3000+ for $330, and United Micro will do an ASUS K8V and 3000+ for $342, with a year warranty.
Just FYI, the Ath64s are the way to go for forward-thinkers. The only OSen that can use the full 64-bit architecture are Win2003 and Linux, currently. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> But that's not a problem as they SPANK the P4s at roughly half the clockrate... an A64-FX51 at 2200MHz (stock speed) will mop the floor with a P4 overclocked to 4GHz in 95% of applications... and the only one where the P4 comes out as faster is in recompressing video. Not playing.. recompressing.
What is HyperTransport? Is it the same/better than an 800Mhz FSB?
Why are almost all the Athlon64 proccessors limited at a 2.2Ghz operating frequency?
I can't find many ASUS Athlon mobos that can run DDR400 in Dual-channel.
I'm trying to get a motherboard and proccessor that are about this:
<b>2.8+ Ghz 800Mhz FSB L2/1mb cache, a mobo that can handle DDR400 in dual-channel, 8x AGP, fast onboard LAN, decent intergrated sound.</b>
But my knowledge of AMD is very limited.
EDIT: oh yeah. I have about $400 to blow.
2) HyperTransport is a funky CPU I/O interface. It integrates a lot of older buzzwords, as well as new things like intra-CPU direct memory communication for multiprocessor machines.
3) When you have RAM that fast, 'dual channel' is more a buzzword than anything else. On the K8V you can use up to two sticks of DDR400 at full-speed. If you add a third, it DOES drop a rank due to the bus bandwidth overhead. To keep full DDR400 with all sticks, be prepared to pay a good chunk of change (quite a bit more than $700-1000) for the motherboard alone.
In short. The Ath64 is a much better bang for your buck. It's faster than the Intel solution, and has 64-bit flexibility (which the P4 doesn't).
As noted. Go to Pricewatch, look up a motherboard bundle of an ASUS K8V and an Ath64 3000+ or better. You'll get it for a good chunk below $400, or hell... just go down to Fry's. You can probably pick one up for around (read: only a little bit more) the same price off-the-shelf.
Cheers! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo-->
