You know you love it ;)
I've smoothed it now, so anyone that would like to mesh it PM me for the model. Or would it be better to attach it to a post? Anyway, i think you've all seen it , id really like to see it in game.

Actually, I hate it xP
Sorry but I had to say it... it's blocky (even with the smoothing), 1400 poligons are waaaaay too high for a P & W model (unless someone does a low poly version like, say, 160 poligons maximum for P & W)... and my personal taste says nottingam beats you so

I lurve it. But it's a bit of a strain on the HL Engine.

ah i thought it would be a strain on gfx cards, but if its on the engine then thats quite a bit worse i guess . the low poly version doesnt really look so good:

Actually...those bolts and fins(?) can be skinned on for the p_ and w_ models. Keep the high-poly for the v_ model. Problem solved.

Okay, imagine you've got the mine weapon out, holding it in your hands. That's the v_ (view) model. Another marine passes by, he's holding a mine in his hands. That's the p_ (player) model. A few seconds later a fade pops out, slaughters that marine, and vanishes. The mines that are now on the floor next to the dead marine are w_ (world) models. Another marine passes you by and plants a mine on the floor nearby. The mine that was just planted is also a w_ (world) model. Generally v_ models are the best-looking of the three, and p_ and w_s (also called peewees) are identical...and lo-res.

p_ = what you see in another player's hands

w_ = what you see on the floor

v_ = what you see in your hands

I think i understand . Because we want a lower poly version for the p_ and w_ models we basically need to mesh etc the two different models, so we have one for the p_ and w_ and one for the v_?

ok, heres the p_ and w_ mine jimmeh, it's smoothed now and optimised a bit (799 polys). It's not compiled cos i cant do that for some reason , it says theres an error or something.

interesting model, but thats wayy highpoly. you could probably remake with low-polies in mind and come out with a great, low-poly model.

You can cut the polycount to a far lower value without loosing any detail on the model. You will even be able to add more detail then atm with less polys beeing used.

If you do this the work will be easier for the UVmapper and low end users will be able to use it.

ah, is 799 polys still too high for a mine?

for a w_model is high but not for a v_model

However is a high pc considering its fairly simple shape, not that I really care cuz my computer can handle it and I wont use it anyway. here's something you can do:
Skin the high poly version with all of the grooves and such,
Then transfer the skin onto the low poly version

Kinda like what HL 2 will be doing with normal mapping (It's not what they are doing, but similar procedure)
