Only in flight sims. If I could get used to it, I would use it for FPS also. I like it better.

I play with the mouse Y zxis inverted, and always have done.

That's not all though - I use the WASD keys for movement, but I use the A key to sidestep right and the D key to sidestep left.

You may point and scream "Freeeeek!".

I've always found inverted to be more natural, which I'm assuming has something to do with the brain differences that also cause me to be lefthanded (which would make Rhoads a freak). And if we're gonna start arguing keyboard configs esdf>>wasd.

That may be so, but havn't you heard? 'Real' men are dying out - natural selection typa thing, see?

Merkaba, you are one crazy fool. Any n00bs here that still use the arrow keys for movement? Or have all us of moved up to WADS?

i find it impossible to paly wit invert mouse, my damn friend always changes the settings whenever he's over and it pisses me off
• Res1Res1 Join Date: 2002-08-18 Member: 1187Members
I play with inverted mouse, it just feels so natural. (oh and im right handed). My brother plays non-inverted I dunno how he does it :/ but I guess you get used to it after a while. (He's also right handed).

esdf > wasd , but i still use wasd.
• LongtoothLongtooth Join Date: 2002-07-02 Member: 863Members
I am left handed, so it is quite strang that I use my mouse right handed....I was forced as a child to use it that way because of the arangment of my desk. One thing that really angers me is that I bought a 60 dollar Sidewinder joystick only to find it was right hand only....So I had to spend several weeks training me right hand to use a joystick.....I suppose these are all examples of the right handed world trying to slowly exterminate the left handed people.

Yeah...as Brewster pointed out, I'm left-handed, even though I use my right hand for the mouse. (Just things that have been forced upon me, since the rest of my immediate family is right-handed.) And since most of my experiments with switching the mouse to my left hand have ended in utter disaster, I think it'll be staying that way.

Actually, I think I'm somewhere on the scale between left-handed and ambidextrous, which could explain why I don't use inverted mouse -- I can throw a frisbee decently well with both hands, and I used to be able to write legibly with my right hand (before I broke my arm, that is). I also catch and throw right-handed(and I play guitar right-handed, but that really doesn't count).

So, uhh....what was the question again?

Go lefties! I've never gotten a high-tech joystick, precisely because they're all right-handed. Oh, and I never play games that need them. (:

For movement, I've pretty much always used ESDF. Being a proficient touch-typer, this is the natural position for my left hand, so it's easy to find and stay on even if I reach for a distant key (I usually have Enter bound to "drop weapon").

As for my mouse - I used to be a standard mouser, until one game changed it all: Drakan. For those of you who missed it, Drakan had two gameplay forms - Tomb Raider-style 3rd person, and 3rd-person dragon-back (a flight sim of sorts). I was fine with it until I finally got on the dragon for the first time... when my days of Wing Commander kicked in, and I pushed the mouse FORWARD to look down. The problem is, you couldn't set mouse axes independently for each character... so I had to choose which of the two would be easier to adjust. And especially considering that Drakan features a fair amount of melee combat, the flight sim element won out, and I inverted my mouse.

And I've been that way ever since! (:

Anyone know what the Lefties to Righties ratio is?
• coilcoil Amateur pirate. Professional monkey. All pance. Join Date: 2002-04-12 Member: 424Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
11% of the population are left-handed.
• LongtoothLongtooth Join Date: 2002-07-02 Member: 863Members
Ouch...that is a harsh ratio...I always thought it was better....I am suprised the Righties haven't wiped us out completley.....

It was funny, in my kindergarten class I was the only leftie, and my teacher who happend to be new did not realize that...and she tried to teach us all right handed. And when report cards rolled around she wrote horrible comments about how I had terrible motor control when writing and using scissors and the like. Then my mom asked why the teacher why she had me writing right handed and the teacher asked "What other way would he write?". If I was old enough to file a complaint I would have had her fired.

It disturbs me that someone can receive certification to teach the very young (a more difficult task than teaching older students, since young children are VERY impressionable) and yet not know that there are left-handed people in the world... and you entered school in what, around 1991-92? That's scary. Something like that can have *long*-lasting repercussions.

Gimme the good old YGHJ any day. It's almost in the center of the keyboard so I can stretch my fingers in different areas for different keys and never reach!

i use an inverted mouse look. it does come from the days of flight sims. specifically, wing commander, which were the first action oriented games i got into that allowed a free look kind of mode. so ever since, its been natural.

also i use the home row for movement, which alot of people cant understand. at least it keeps people off of my computer at lan parties.

Inverted.

Its all Duke Nukem 3D's fault ..

well, actually him, the LAN at my old HS and a player that always played with it.

I was a strait keyboard user at the time and using a mouse seemed rather odd and silly.

I desided to try it one day and it took some getting used to, but its now become my standard.

Any game I play has inverted movement. FPS - Flight sims. PC's - consoles.

I cant play it anyother way, and I care not to learn.

Its also a nice way of keeping people off your games ...

I'm a leftie too. and I'm like Rhoads, somewhere between left handed and ambidextrous.

and I use my mouse uninverted. except for flight sims, but those are few and far between

I feel boring. I use aswd, I use non-inverted mouse woth my right hand...
Btw. I have a five button-2-wheel-mouse... Is there a way to bind additional mousebuttons into HL/ NS? Let's say, reload and teamsay or sth. And what about the second wheel? One to cycle weapons, and one to... hm. well... cycle menus or sth. ?

Hehe, I never even used the mouse until about Quake 2, and Ive been playing FPSs since Wolfenstein 3D. I used to use the numeric keypad for all of the movement, as well as look up and look down, I used the a strafe modifyer key when I wanted to move from side to side, and I used shift for jump, ctrl for fire, alt for use, and space for crouch. It was a very strange config, but I was quite good at it and pretty fast with the keys. Sometimes I would use the mouse to aim when I was zoomed in with the railgun. Eventually, I learned to use the mouse instead of only the keyboard, now I use WAXD (forward, strafe left, strafe right, and backpedal, respecivly), and S is my crouch key. I grew attached to this minor alteration of WASD when I played System Shock 2, and found it quite intuitive. And my mouse isnt inverted, I feel that when I move the mouse down, I should look down, etc.
