Early in 4a, it was possible to drop an alien chamber on top of a built marine resnode, and have it sink in. It was ALSO possible to drop a chamber of any kind directly on a node, yet still place a res tower.
It was even possible to have a marine AND alien res on the same node if the marine res was dropped while the alien was still building. :o
And a lot of railings, slopes and stairs are now easily buildable on. - Combat time limit : I wasn't able to play CO games, as the local servers haven't patched up yet. However, the timelimit thing sure does make Combat live to its title of fast-paced action.
- Lerk flight cost : Uhh...I don't see any difference between last version ad this version....maybe its because I don't bind +jump to my mousewheel ad pancake? Overall, very nice change, and still make Celerity and Silence as viable as they were in Beta 4.
- Timer : This change == WIN! But you might want to put it elsewhere, looks like it clutters up the HUD a lot.
- Focus cost : Uhh....I don't see why it is needed, but I definitely needed something to fill up that extra slot when I'm a lv 10 lerk.
- Umbra changes : I like, even though I'm an avid lerker. Umbra was definitely too powerful back then, and this shouldn't impact it too much.
- Random bug/exploit fixes : WIN!!!!

Let's look at it this way....
Beta 4 : Lerk pancakes, spores. When pancaking adren recharges as flapping does not cost energy. Beta 4a : Lerk pancakes, spores. When pancaking energy does <b>not</b> regenerate as flapping a lot keeps the energy bar down.
Like I said, RaVe, Cagey rewrote most of the collision system for buildings. We were messing around with it a lot on bast, and were able to get chambers and buildings into a lot of spaces you wouldn't expect. Even on the stairs from main aft to engine. Without sinking! :o
I think Cagey still has to contact those map's makers to optimize the broken-ness of specific res-nodes, but it should be MUCH MUCH more friendly to place RTs in maps, and buildings in general.
What's the point of having a 10 minute round when you can't even use the higher upgrades like Onos or Heavy Armor + HMG.
True, maybe a couple skilled individuals can reach those ranks, but mostly, combat has devolved into a Skulk vs Light marine war...
It's nice that server admins can change the time limit... but IMO, that just leads to confusion. Which way is the "standard" time? Which should be used for competitions? Won't different servers all be using different times (if they don't like the 10-minute default)? Why have such a diversity of game settings... I want to play ONE standard game type, across all servers... not where on one server the time is 10 minutes, and on another server, the time is 30 minutes.
Also, the game timer, on my 640x480 video setting, overlaps my health read-out, and I can't read what my health and armor are. Please fix this... just place it on the right part of the screen, because all that is there, is the Energy bar.
As for lerk changes, they work well. I play lerk all the time, and having free flight was just way too powerful. I'm sad to see umbra downgraded YET AGAIN... but it was pretty powerful.
I think the umbra absorption percentage is OK, maybe it should be improved slightly in some other way to make it easier to use (since people don't seem to use it much anyway in pubs)

I think the timer move from the scoreboard to the hud is fine. Anything over 800x600 res, and it fits in rather well. Even with net_graph.
I really don't think focus is worth the 2 point upgrade, well I dont get it so I dont care too much, but if you do the maths once the marines get level 1 or 2 armour it becomes almost worthless.
Level 3 focus gives you 50% increase in damage but cuts your rate of fire down by 66% this means that in the same amount of time you will do less damage, so if the marines survive the first bite (assuming all bites hit) then you will kill them quicker without focus.

A combat match lasts 10 minutes and aliens win if marines don't do anything but sit around in base. Please don't base your opinion on the two games you've played with people who did not understand the new combat.
We tested combat for two days with big teams and it was balanced. Marines won, aliens won.
The point of 10 minutes is to allow the skilled people to get more upgrades and not have a stalemate of level 10 players. 10 minutes is just enough time for marines to win. Any more and they are certain to win.
Well, im sure as all of the beta's have, that 3.04a will grow on me. But i've just had some of the least enjoyable combat games yet.
When the timelimit runs out it feels like a total waste of time.
I then go aliens and as usual I lerk. However now I find that umbra is less effective, and that I can't even get focus without spending two levels, which i'm not gonna do becuase it defeats the element of 'early' lerk. So yeah, there I am biting away at the JPers that are coming into our hive. However, when I bite them, I can't get the second bite in fast enough before they get medpacked.
Oh well, i'm sure I'll work around it. Get a new upgrade ladder or something, or just avoid combat altogether which is proably best for my sanity.

gamma grafic bug or something. when i play like 10 minutes, then i get dark screen, and im not the only one. and no. my screen/grafic card is working 100% fine.
Stak, spraying a cloud that will negate pretty much all damage marines can do to lifeforms is not teamwork. It was overpowered. It's not nerfed, but it's weakened so marines stand a chance against aliens with two hives.
I agree with whoever said that they played some of the worst games of combat because of the new patch. I play an hour of combat last night, and it was horrid.

With the amount of stuff crammed into the NS hud, I'm suprised you could aim and shoot anything in 640x480, let alone see to walk.

Time limit should be 15 or 20 minutes. 10 is fun, but most people will get to skill lvl 6 only.
