Ok, Here's A Challenge

<div class="IPBDescription">Bet you can't</div> Yes, it's the guy who wants a HL tattoo again.

I had a thought, I've always liked impossible figures (i.e. Escher, Reutersvard etc) and thought about getting something like a tri bar

<img src='http://members.lycos.nl/amazingart/images/triangle.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

or maybe something a bit more complex. Anyway, it occurred to me while musing over my HL tat designs... maybe it is possible to combine the two? I've done a few design's but I don't have access to any decent programs and I'm really seriously bad on paper. I even resorted to using the picture creator on my mobile phone! (and it was bad... but still better than my non-digital attempts).

Anyway, I wanna see if any really talented people can do this, I know we have some great photo-shoppers and stuff on here and... well, just hoping. I was gonna have it done it a weeks time but spent £50 on books and £40 on alcohol (which hurt) and now I'm getting it next month so there is some time left for a new design to turn my head.

If anyone can help I'd be appreciative... very appreciative <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> ... if you know what I mean <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    It looks to me like the lambda would fit perfect in either the triangle or the pentagon.

    Yeah, I've done that a bit (though it'd be nice to see a computer version instead of my useless 'crayoned-by-a-5yr-old' style drawing) but I was hoping to see someone attempt the really difficult one, make the HL symbol itself look physically impossible.

    Was thinking it might be possible as an angle, think of the three limbs of the 'upsidedown-y' as the edges to a 3D shape, whether they all point the same way I dont know, would look better if they didn't but then all still connected to the border.

    Anyway, you get the idea.

    I'll be back on tomorrow to see if anyone picked up the gauntlet. Sorry to use you all as slave labour, its not my plan to turn the forums into a giant sweat shop...

    now who wants to make me 500 fake gucci purses? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    erm the only way I can think about doing this is sticking that triangle to the base of the lamda sign (thats the name of the symbol hl uses in its logo), but that would put a line at the bottom... hmm

    basically almost anything you can do will change how the shape looks in 2D

    1) ive always wounder wth half life uses the lamba symbol, when lamba is the scientific symbol for wavelenth, not half life which is the half the time it takes for a radioactive element to decay... </rant>

    hmmm, maybe have the lamba big enough the the 3d triangle can be inside it, maybe in cutout style...but that would take a either a large symbol or a really steady hand...

    no correct proportions.
    will not believe someone would tatto this.

    The lambda looks nice <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->. The pentagon...not so nice <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

    as a background because i like it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Rah, thanks guys. All three look great although Ollj's Lambda looks a bit like an A and as good as it looks i'd get **** off with people asking me why i've got an A on my shoulder <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

    Thanks to Version91x as well, I love them both though obviously I can't have the background tattooed on as well. The simpler one is perfect though, just the kind of thing I was after... gonna have a hard time trying to decide.

    I'll see what my mates say but I there is a high possibility that is the one I'm gonna use. (As long as people don't turn it into a joke about HL's unrealistic physics <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

    Double Rah, yet another one I've printed off (my work colleagues look at me oddly... I dont care).

    Definitely the kind of thing I'm after. Thanks mate, I owe you a pint... dunno how you'll get it but I do <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I think I prefer the top one with the black lines, it just seems more 3D, both so pretty though. Have a look around on the internet for more inspiration. I can just imagine the never ending staircase with a HA Train on it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Well, if he had A, then all people would be asking why he has A. But if he will have lambda, then all people <b>except those who know half-life</b> will be asking why he has a lambda.
  • CMEastCMEast Join Date: 2002-05-19 Member: 632Members
    Exactly, all those who know the game HL will bow before me, those that I don't will ask me what the tattoo is from so I get to shout RTFM then bunny hop away from them

    I've always had a fascination for these impossible drawings, I even used a primitive 3d modelling program to create one. I would have screenshots, but I reformatted and lost them.

    (CMF_FATAL wanted to know about the lamba symbol. It is used as wavelength, but is also used to represent the decay constant for radioactive decay, the probability of decay in a fixed time.)

    Ah damn it I wanted to say that and sound all clever. oh well.

    just found the thread, I have nothing construtive to offer in the form of advice/artwork, and my main reason for checking the whole thread was taken by Z.X. Bogglesteinsky (grrr <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->).

    but I will say that all these impossible drawings rule, my maths teacher used to have loads in her classroom, and have always fascinated me and others in teh class. well that and the cat picture calander.

    oh and when you finally get inked CMEast - WE WANT PICS!!
