<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->A couple notes: I put "improving" in italics because it's a key part of where the community may or may not be split. Pretty much everybody wants to see it fixed obviously, so that it works the way it's supposed to in its current state. But, as evidenced by the ever-active S&I forum, many people believe that there are ways the game could be better, whether in terms of aesthetics, tech stuff, or gameplay mechanics. What I'm asking here is whether the users at large believe it's more important to continue refining that, or to begin crafting new things.

This poll doesn't take Combat into consideration. You can't make that new gametype, as it's already made, and it's new enough that it's going to continue to be patched and refined for a long while yet, regardless of what else the devs are doing at the moment.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I think they should improve a bit more on Classic NS. ALthough it looks like they're focusing on Classic more. It's actually Combat thats getting fixed a wee bit more than before.
Of course that's understandable since new gamemodes need lots of balancing.

I'm looking forward to when proper Marine Vs Marine is implimented.

So both teams have a commander etc. Now that would be rockin'

Personally, I'd rather see 3.0 actually finished at some reasonably soon date. This means eventually doing a feature-freeze (and as soon as possible to get into the final bugfixing, balancing, and polishing that a Final requires).
My vote goes in that favor. Save the new gametypes (which can cause a rift in the playerbase, as well) for 4.0, and get 3.0 polished up and ready to really face the world... including the Steam/VAC integration that's been so long in coming.

I would like to see classic balanced out more because the alien's are at a huge disadvantage when it come's to large game's. They are just simply outspawned and get res extremely slow early gamme.

I'd rather see two fully working and well balanced game types than 4 slightly wonky ones. I don't think there's really a choice.

I enjoy combat, but I would rather be enjoying classic(which I did last night). I vote A.

Improving classic. Natural Selection competes on the FPS/RTS hybrid field which, as far as I know, it goes with unprecedented design, ambition, and execution. I don't see why this should be abandoned to support a simple throw-together genre like FPS games.

Only voted for new gametype because I've wanted MvM for a while, if we had MvM instead of combat then I would have voted to improve <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Same, I hope this will be in b5.

IMO combat and classic should each be given 50% of the dev's effort. Once both are polished, perfected and fully steam-compatable, <i>then</i> the devs should worry about other game modes (ie: MvM.)

I stand for originality, NS Classic was the best, combat, yeah ok.. one new gametype.. still be able to play classic but MORE?!?

Fix NS and then make new game modes. Having two unbalanced modes is really bad.
  • DaxxDaxx Join Date: 2002-04-16 Member: 460Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
Get it finished, then worry about new stuff. Just constantly adding new stuff will make sure it never gets truely finished.
  • Jim_has_SkillzJim_has_Skillz Join Date: 2003-01-19 Member: 12475Members, Constellation
Definately improve the game itself first, why create new stuff that will definately have to be beta tested when there is classic stuff that should really be looked at first.

    I agree!

New features are really cool but they should balance around the game not the other way around. Classic is top priority IMO.

Voted for classic NS. New features for classic NS imo is an ok idea.

Since beta 4 (this is only slightly better with beta 4a, as I've seen infinitely more marine wins i.e 1 instead of 0), combat is entirely pointless unless you want to practice being a skulk. Marines spend all but the first 3 minutes dead. And on the servers I play on, the timer rarely works (it doesnt stop the game at 15 mins, but keeps going), focus still only costs 1, and the new lerk adren usage isn't noticeable if you have adrenaline. I've seen marines win (legitimately, i.e. the alien team didn't all F4) once. And that was due to stackage and suckage. I'm not bashing combat, just the spawn system. The concept of combat is great, but the implementation leaves a lot to be desired.

So basically I would like to see combat balanced and functional, and NS classic worked on. I'm not going to go into detail on solutions, but something needs to be done about turret farms. Marines w/ shotties or HMGS > WoL, but Aliens (cept onos or strong Fade) < Turret Farms (if its a half decent TF).

The one soluton to a lot of NS Classic's problems is teamwork, but that's never going to happen without driving away most players, which is a rather bad marketing practice.

I'm gonna go with the general(read: correct) answer. Perfect classic and then move on.

Let me put this real simple.

NS Classic is the version with the potential for true greatness.

NS Combat can only be a real fun distraction at best.

It has always been my opinion that Classic has all the hallmarks of a deep and entertaining standalone game. To me Combat is more like a little "fun mode" that comes with a game.

Concentrate on the Classic has always been my tune, I think it is a more worthwhile investment of your time.

fix and improve the original game type; everything in the other gameplay modes <i>are</i> based off of those values, correct?

Positioning and branding are two concepts which Flayra should start thinking about.

At the moment NS is the world leader in RTS/FPS hybrids, and is synonymous with that genre. If you think RTS/FPS you think Natural Selection, and vica versa.

By creating a new gametype such as Combat you dilute the Natural Selection brand, which is detrimental to both Combat and Classic NS.

Creating new gametypes is like Coca-Cola creating cellular phones, or Microsoft selling pickles.

IHMO Flayra should FOCUS his attention on the Natural Selection brand, which to me is essentially moody RTS/FPS gameplay. Focus on the squad gameplay of the marines, and the evolutionary gameplay of the aliens. Focus on making new and interesting maps which promote the atmospheric backstory. Most importantly only add things which strengthen the NS brand, and the unique position of being the RTS/FPS world leader.

i'd rather they quickly finish beta 5, release it and then get to work on those other modes, not mvm specifically but something fun.

I would like to see some gameplay improvements in NS classic, it seems to me that NS2.01 had slightly better gameplay than released 3.0 betas..

for gods sake, finish NS at least in this version before moving to something else.
