Heeeeey. I was wondering if one of you could help me with a problem. I just installed NS 3.0 and all of it's patches, but whenever I try to log into a game it says that my client differs from that of the servers and that it needs to be updated. I remember it happening to me before during the switch-over to 2.0 but for the life of me, I cannot remember out how I fixed it. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure you got the 4a patch?
• Corporal_Hicks1Corporal_Hicks1 Join Date: 2003-05-27 Member: 16762Members
Yep. I downloaded both of the patches. I'm still getting the little notice.

did you get b1, then b4, then b4a?
• Corporal_Hicks1Corporal_Hicks1 Join Date: 2003-05-27 Member: 16762Members
Yes. I installed the game then both of the patches in order. I don't understand why this is going on...

Well, if you're absolutely positively sure that you've got the patches, are you sure you're joining a NS 3.0 B4a server? >.>...i know its an obvious question, but we can't leave out any possiblities.

Your going to have to do it again then, that error means that you installed them wrong. I know its annoying to install so many patches but its still beta so you probably haven't installed one of the patches right.

The B4A servers are "NS v3.0 beta 4a", while the B4 servers are "Natural Selection v3.0 beta 4". As Lito said, obvious question, but make sure.

Yes I know some servers that still don't update them but this might not be the problem since most of the servers should be updated. So it must be a installation error.

more obvious question - did you install to steam? cause I would imagine most of the WON servers are still using 2.0.

Install beta 1 (ie. the huge one)
install beta 4
install beta 4a

I'm not sure I understand the question. I uninstalled, NS 2.0, then I installed 3.0 in the Half-life folder (Just like with 2.0 which worked just fine.) Are you telling me that it's meant to be installed someplace else for it to be recognized and what not?

Because another thing I have noticed is that whenever I try to enter an NS server, I would get the typical Half-Life backround while the thing loads and tells me about the client problem rather than the NS backround.

P.S. Sorry about putting this thread in the wrong forum.

1. Download and install Steam ("Half-life Steam Installer" recommended, 211 megabytes).

2. Run Half-life through Steam at least once, by loading up the training course. This is necessary to make sure NS will have the files it needs.

3. Download and install 3.0 beta 1 from a mirror below (150 megabytes).

4. Download and install the 3.0 beta 4 patch from a mirror below (38 megabytes).

5. Download and install the beta 4a patch (4.4 megabytes).

6. Learn how to play. Join "Combat" games to start (maps start with "co_"). Join "NS" games when you're more experienced (maps start with "ns_").

7. Stay informed of news and community updates. We will never spam you and your personal information will always remain private.

I think you missed the first two steps.

It feels horrible to have to expose a possibly fragile mind to the horror that is steam, but it can't really be avoided.

As far as half-life is concerned, steam is basically the system that is going to replace WON. It is also a new way to distribute new games via the internet instead of buying them on a cd. It also loves to crash a lot, disconnect you randomly, and get stuck updating. Have fun.

Well, I already have Steam. (Which isn't so bad, at least in my case.) I also played many games through it already, from Sven Co-op, to CS, to TFC. Am I to take it that I'm supposed to install NS in one of the Steam folders and NOT in the Half-Life folders?

I know. I know. I'm a simpleton, but please bear with me.

Ohhhhhhh. Ok. I'll try it just as soon as I can requisition the good computer from my brother. Here's hoping it will work.
