Can't Load Fast Enough To Comm

LitoLito Join Date: 2003-09-04 Member: 20560Members
I want to comm, but i hardly get any experience. The only times i get to comm are:

1. The game ends really really quickly and theres time for another game

2. The comm is one of those "put down two ips and a tf then gets out and asks 'who wants to comm?'"

3. The comm gets out midgame and quits

By the time i get in the game, the game has already started and is 1 minute in. I know there is a plug-in (RRQuestion), but other than that, is there any way to speed up load-times, even by a few seconds? Any input is greatly appreciated.

ok, heres what ya do, you change your name to something you'll never use again, then you go to a game and rush the comm chair hard core! or if theres going to be time for a second game in NS tell everyone that you'll comm and then when you do just do the best that you can and since you have an alias you don't have to worry about people hating you forever (which I doubt they would anyways) most people tend to understand begginer commanders, as long as you do your best and don't do anything too terribly stupid you'll be fine

Try binding a button to "jointeamone" and hit that as soon as you connect. If by the time you connect the game has already started, then I suppose you're stuck.

You can try requesting to be a commander before the mapchange I suppose.

    Other things you could try;

    - Delete your custom.hpk file in /nsp. I believe it contains custom player sprays and can take up some serious loading time when it becomes big.

    - Try to borrow some old RAM (memory) from friends that have bought a newer PC. This is how i do to upgrade my computer most of the time <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> RAM is very important for loading times.

    - Add -noipx to your HL shortcut/launch parameters. It will disable that protocol, wich isnt used in a internet game anyway.

    - Defrag your hard drive regulary <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Ahh I hate those guys who jump in the cc drop 2 ips and a armory and may give himself or herself a shotgun and jump out. Well even if map changes and so map change load speed should be fast enough for you to press f1 (Jointeamone) and then rush the com chair.

I know there's a program (I forgot the name) which lets you customize your defrag. For example it lets you arrange data like you want.
My suggestion: google it, and put the steam directory AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF YOUR HARD DISK. This is where data is read the most efficiently. And BTW it defrags faster than the windows tool ^^

Whats wrong with dropping 2 ip's at the start of the game if no one has gone comm for 30 seconds? I only do this after everyone has got into the game and no one seems to want to comm so that the marine team doesnt die too quickly.

If no one will commit to being a comm then the marine team is going to die quickly anyway, no point in dropping IPs. When this happens I generally prefer just convincing people to charge the hive and see how long we can last without any respawns.

I hate people that drop ips and crap and then get out.

If nobody's gonna command, you're dead anyway. Don't ruin the game for your team by screwing up whatever strategy the real comm has.

besides -noipx there are a few other commands you can use in your command line to help speed things up.

When I was playing CS back in the day, I would always be the first on the map due to disabling some of the unnecessary loading through the command line.

Here is a few links to look at...

    <a href='http://halflife.ukrpack.net/csfiles/help/Command_Line_Flags.shtml' target='_blank'>http://halflife.ukrpack.net/csfiles/help/C...ine_Flags.shtml</a>

    <a href='http://www.planetfortress.com/tfc/tech/windowsxp.shtml' target='_blank'>http://www.planetfortress.com/tfc/tech/windowsxp.shtml</a>

    Have fun.

Doesn't matter how fast you conenct because when you spawn you'll be placed randomly in the room, someone else that wants to comm could probably reach the CC before you.

Thanks for the links, rob, they were helpful.

Sure someone can always get in the chair before me...all i'm asking for is a chance to get in the chair.

When i join, its about ~30 seconds into the game already, and i have no chance to get in the chair. But if I could join before the game starts, i have a much bigger chance to command.

Wow, I have crappy RD RAM (256 in quantity with CAS9 [9?!?!?!?GODDAMNIT!] and RAS RCD timings at 7, speed is effectively 400 mhz) and I can usually load NS fairly quickly.

RAM is pretty key here. You want as much RAM as possible. (At least 256 quality ram)

I think it's way better just to die then a get a completely new game instead of just wasting time wanking around..

I got a 1.7ghz and 256 ram and i usually get in the game before the timer starts (or right when the beeping sound is played)

Depends, my first load of a NS map is slow compared to when the map changes on a server.

This is a sad story :-[ Seriously. I hope you get some comm time.

Also: defragging actually slowed my load times down if you can believe it.

thanks for all the tips, my computer can now load within 10 seconds of the game starting. It isn't before the beeping, but its during the time where people are going "So...who's comm?". I get to comm alot more often, now. Thanks <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

If no one goes comm for like half a minute a minute I usually exclaim allright lets shotty rush/IP rush the hive! After a minute if you don't have a comm your going to lose so no one wants to comm, better just lose quickly and have fun.

Only if it fails does everybody gets a bit peeved.

Well. When I learned to command, I didn't smurf or anything, I knew the hang of it, had some clanmates give me some tips and I asked other top commanders what they did and so on.

It took me some time to kill my instinct of getting out of chair and shooting that skulk only to my dismay that my grip on the mouse is quite different when I command that when I shoot, so my aim usually aint that hot when I pop right out of the chair and die <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo--> .

Commanding is fun when you feel like it, sometimes the burden of having to cater to other people's needs is just too much.

Takes some skill to command I say. But skill is nothing more than practice x time.
