Radeon 9800 Pro No Worky :(

SaltzBadSaltzBad Join Date: 2004-02-23 Member: 26833Members
My system :
Athlon 2000+
512 megs of ram
k7s5a motherboard
onboard sound (erk)
Radeon 9800 pro

The problem :
Launch almost any game, and it will crash after a few minutes, prompting a reboot. I also get tiny screen artifacts on booting. Tried 4.5 and 4.4 cats (I think), no difference. It seems to be some sort of memory error or something, as after running it for a bit I got more artifacts in windows (like incorrect icons).

Anyone able to help?

    A) What is your PSU rating? 300W? 350? 400+?

    B) Do you have Fast Writes mode turned on? (If so, turn them OFF)

    C) Is your AGP Aperture set properly in the BIOS? (**NOT** set to what's on the card!!)

    D) Is it a third-party manufacturer card? (There's a reason I only buy Built By ATi cards)

    E) What chipset does that motherboard use?

    F) What's the temperature reading inside your case when it starts artifacting?

I have the solution. Give me your 9800 Pro, I'll give you my nVidia GeForce2 MMX. Problem solved.

    Wow, that's a lot of questions... Difficult questions <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Sorry for the off the topic but does Radeon 9800 pro still come with half-life 2?

    A) Probably 300 - its a salvaged piece. I've disconnected everything except the HD and motherboard from the powersupply though, and have no additional devices running. Doesn't seem to make a difference. Also, the crashtype isn't very typical for low-power afaik.

    B) Off

    C) Haven't messed with it, but its probably at 32 or 64.

    D) ATI

    E) I'll have to look that up via google later. Its a K7S5A ECS board though *shrug*

    F) It starts mildly artifacting on boot. And I don't know any good ways to read my temperature right now, the BIOS indicators aren't terribly conclusive or practical to check while artifacting.

    1) latest drivers

    2) heat-related problems maybe?

If not, then I'd say you just got a defective one. Take it back and exchange it for another.

    <b><span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>Saltzbad! Are you using RD Ram?</span></b>

IF you are, make sure to check its compatibility with your Motherboard. My bro had the exact same problem launching games. Turns out his motherboard was incompatible with RD Ram and he had to get a new one. Oddly enough, everything else worked on it other than games. Guess it didn't need that much memory.

System RAM, not Radeon RAM? No, thats working fine. I use a GF4 MX right now while I'm trying to figure out the Radeon. Nothing really crashes on me. Nothing really plays well either, but eh <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

On a totally unrelated note, my FPS with that card were also suspiciously low. As in, they'd still drop to ~25ish in fights.

The card can be defective. My first brand new GeForce3 right out of the shop was dead. It performed horribly and was still brand new while it was supposed to be the top of the line at that time

The 9800 pro never came with HL2

I heard it was going to come with hl2 but when the 2nd source code leaked they stopped doing it so I was wondering if they going make it come with hl2 again.

I know this was my problem anyway.

I run with the case open, and while the thing gets warm, not beyond whats touch-able to even a sissy like me.

Its probably just a defective unit. You can send it back to ATI and they will replace it. To make sure they'll replace it, just break a resistor off before you send it in <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

In regards to HL2, the Pro series never came with it. Only the XT series (9600XT and 9800XT) did.
