<div class="IPBDescription">First time without being ejected ?</div> I got thinking on a reply I did in another forum.
I'm curious to see something.
Of all the commanders that did theire first command view match ever, how many managed to play the whole game without being ejected ?
I mean, if someone wants to learn how to command, how can he do it if he gets ejected in the first 30 minutes ? How can you learn something if people boots you out each time.
I commanded about 10 times in the past 2 years and I admit I am not an expert and did get ejected in 7 of them. So I only had 3 games where I commande through the whole thing (won 2 times in those).

don't try to comm in bigger games, I've noticed people don't mind in smaller games to let a newbie comm <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I didn't command until i was thoroughly confortable with NS, and so commanding kind of came natural for me.
I am not asking what to do in this case. I am simply trying to find out how often this has happened and perhaps, if it has blocked/stopped in any way the will to learn commander view to anyone.
You don't 'learn' how to command by just jumping in. Albiet, its the fastest way, but its also the best way to get ejected in 30 seconds.
You learn the basics of the comm interface offline: in your own server.
Put cheats on and finding out what each thing does, and how much each thing costs. After you've burned this into memory, you go on public servers and see how a competent commander puts all this to use. You learn strategy by listening to orders and seeing if they work or not. You learn tatics by comparing different ways the same strategy is carried out and learn which one was more effective and why.
The only thing you CAN'T learn is interfacing with marines (selecting, grouping, waypointing), which you can learn in about 10 seconds, since its the exact same as any RTS game.
There is no excuse for being a unknowing comm, only a slow one. A slow comm is not as likely to get ejected if he is doing well.
Using this ideology, i was only ejected (for a reasonable reason) 2 times as a commander:
the First time was my first game of NS ever. I didn't read the manual and was very intrigued with the whole concept of commander mode, and jumped in the chair to explore. Was ejected immediately.
The second time was when i commanded as a semi-competent comm, but not competent enough (it seemed) to satisfy the marine team. Ejected within 10 minutes. This is when i smartened up and learned the mechanics of the game before i comm'd again.
Being ejected never stunted my learning as a commander. It was a wake-up call: You're not good enough yet.
If all else fails, you can travel to the Himilayian Mountains to train as a Commander with the Shaolin Monks with GoldLeader, Saltzbad and the others...
It's always for a good reason in the eyes of the person who kicked you, however it is rarely a good enough reason in your own opinion.
I had someone yell "FFS NOOB EJECT!!!" just because I did not drop a tfac at the start of a pub game...

But yes, the mike is your key. However, if you're <13 I would strongly recommend waiting for your voice to break first. You really do loose any confidence your marines may have in you if you start sqeaking "Please move to get rteeeeeeeees"

The position of the com is quite a tough job:
You've got to:
-Build up a decent base
-Resupply (give em medpacks & ammo packs) your soldiers all the time.
-Make sure you get RT's/Upgrades/Research stuff
-Order those (mostly) un'diciplined soldiers around.
-Make sure you keep pushing those Kharaa by taking their Hives/RT's
Though it's one of the coolest things to do imho <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Base defence consists of an elec tfac, and then 2 sets of mines round the ips and amoury. The tfac is only really useful for electrification; turrets should not come into MS until after the first fades appear; the res is better used on an armslab and weapon upgrades.
Turrets WILL NOT take down fades. Marines will.
The second time, we were doing so well. We had 7 nodes and jps. The second I drop the jps, each member of my team flys off in a different direction and dies. I am out of res, my team is dead. I says WTH, recycle the base, hop out and suicide. <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
NS is a very tight community and if its your first time on a server and u jump in the chair without even a word you might be booted. Its natural that your team will want people that they are familiar with and trust to be the comm. I comm over 60% of my marine games, and do a fairly good job, however if I want to comm on a server i dont normally play on i just tell em on the mic "I can comm, Ill do a good job" And from then on i keep talking, and to this day i have never been booted for being a bad comm.
NB. My friends boot me all the time just to **** me off.
