Yes, I did toy with the colors abit, along he was kinda hard to follow, I just started using Photoshop yesterday.. The whole embossing, and leveling thing confused me the most..

Somebody figure out how to add water and greenery that doesn't suck!
PS: Supa soivice, esuna! <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> The water was extremely simple. In the initial colouring, use a deep blue colour to so the whole planet is, at first, water. Then when you add the texturing, rather than just depicting bumps and varying land heights, change the brush to green, tweak the brush a bit (I can't remember exactly what i used) and then paint the land. Also, paint the occasional touch in the blue, rather than this creating a strong green blob, you create a lighter, slightly turquoise blob, which looks like shallower water.
Then follow the rest of the steps. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Thought i'd follow one of their other tutorials on <a href='http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/tuts_arts/making_a_star_field.html' target='_blank'>how to make a star field</a>. Then i applied it to my planet. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
It came out a bit crap since i didn't save the planet .psd, so i had to hack it on there.
Oh god I really suck at this. It's just a black blob <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It looks ok, but the highlights are way too harsh.
has anyone browsed through this guy's work? <a href='http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/paintings.html' target='_blank'>http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/paintings.html</a>
breathtaking =O
make sure to download some of his wallpapers as well.
esuna: the bottom part of your star field is really boss. Especially down on the right, there's some good variety there. The basic background stars look a bit odd, though. I know nothing about PS, but from looking at it, I think running whatever widget it is that fuzzes stuff out a few more times might help, because the stars are a bit too squarish, and making that part a bit more irregular would cut down on the... hard to describe... there's just a look to it that isn't right. You can tell that there are layers there, as opposed to it just being a picture.
Esuna, tone down the contrast of the stars. A lot. Looking at a planet, only the brightest stars would be visible, since the light reflected from the planet would pretty much wash out everything else (Look at pictures of the earth from space. Notice how many stars you see around it. Hardly any. For the same reason you don't see stars in the daytime).
Okay, so it's not supposed to be 'real', but it's one of those cheap hacky petpeeves that I see in a lot of PS that just pisses me off <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
In fact, the first one with a black background looks FAR more realistic then the starfield one.
BTW: A friend of mine used this tutorial and a couple other and made an AMAZING graphic of two planets smashing into each other. Tres chic. I'll see if he still has it.
Meh... everytime I view this thread, and see all the bleak, mottled brown planets, the line, "History is written on the sands of Arrakis..." plays through my head...
<img src='http://pj2.nerdyasian.com/plnt.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' /> My lousy attempt. I was going to make the moon or something, then I realized it wasn't blue.

i like your picture pjofsky, very... um... cool. i like the whole unrealistic-reality feel youve got there <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
it looks really nice except the shadow on the planet: where's the light source? I won't criticize any more I can't do better <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I suppose the straight star lines are also slightly unreal but that might simulate speed whatever or something that looks cool
