ok, i get skinning, WTH is up with this
How the hell do u guys get the mesh, I've got lithunwrap, but that just crashes everytime i try to import the models, or there are huge parts missing for some reason

Anyone got ne decent links for how to make meshes, i've tried all the ones in the tutorial bit, but either the plugin they use isn't supported in max 6 or its just plain rubbish.

Well, I use maya, it's all atomatic, although it isn't very good. I'd end up with crazy meshes.

Start off with really easy objects like boxes and barrels to get a feel for how it works. Make a couple yourself to start off with, if you can't be bothered, e-mail/pm me and I'll send some barrel model's your way as they take like 10 minutes to knock together. You can then apply the principles you have learnt from these simple objects to subsections of much more complicated models. Then you can gradually build yourself up until you can skin and entire rifle model or such like.

Ok, its that i can't get the model into the mesh in the first place.

I can do modelling (i suppose) its getting the mesh from the model that is difficult for me.

If you view said chamfered grip from the side, try selecting the outmost vertices where the chamfering is most great (assuming we are working in lithunwrap) and scale them up slightly, you may know this but little things like this can prove most helpful to beginners. This should reduce some of the stretching you are bound to get from chamfered edges.

I also recommend that you learn to complete at least the whole model making process yourself. This will help you to aid the people who participate in the other parts of the process to complete their task easier.

For example, from my limited experience of skin meshing I have learnt to create more groups as a modeller as it makes the meshing process a lot easier.

The extra groups also, do not hurt the animation process as you just have to assign more groups to the same bone, giving the same overall effect during animation as if you had put 3-4 seperate groups within the same group.
