See if your ISP offers a usenet server to you. If they do, then check out <a href='http://www.newzbin.com' target='_blank'>www.newzbin.com</a>, it's an indexing site for usenet. Usenet requires a newsreader such as newsbin pro, newsleecher, BNR2, etc.
In the early years of the internet, when people were talking about how amazing it was to talk to people all over the world without censorship, they were talking about usenet. Once used as a discussion message board type thing, it's now mainly used as a giant file dump, although plenty of text groups still exist.
