    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->In order for such dark maps to work both teams would need some vision improvements. Alien flashlight working on marines would get the job done, but the marine flashlight would need some major revamps so it's actually useful for lighting up skulks(and so it doesn't show up as a big sphere of light around the marine to everyone else), which is probably not easy at all for the HL engine.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Metroid Prime, anyone? <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Still, adding such enchaments would mean that somekind of an filter were needed. Example: PSP8.1 effects employ predefined "rules" to alter already existing image (by finding traces, contours, etc). I do not know how HL engine works, but wouldn't a simple call for a predefined mode do the job -incidentally binded to button "F?" <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    (Just idle banter here, in case you are wondering.)

    By 'predefined', I mean that if call X is made, mode A becomes enabled, which could be, for example: negative colours (aliens). That rule-set would be easy to code, as it would be only inverting RGB value, thus also being simple for the engine to handle.

    Oh, well; you can always dream, don't you? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Check the mapping guidelines -- maps are supposed to FEEL dark, but NOT require the flashlight to be able play.

    I could see this being an interesting change in NS, but it would require more than just locking a variable to a new value. Marine bases would have to be reworked to be lit and safe (without having to pay for floodlights). Flashlight would have to not suck (isn't going to happen with the HL1 engine). The kharaa will need a way to see marines hiding in the dark as well (SOF doesn't count, as the flashlight isn't an upgrade <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

    To whoever thought those screenshots look awfully familiar: the lighting style (though nowhere near the quality) is reminiscent of a few very-new, dark games like Doom3. The high contrast between light and dark is a big part of it.

    If there were a way to consistently apply gamma settings to everyone and then balance the game around that, it would be great. Always straining against the darkness to see a skulk creeping through the shadows at you, that would be fun. But as long as people can adjust their gamma on their monitors or with video driver settings or with third party programs, there will be those that will crank it up to the point that shadows will vanish. Then leaving these atmospheric and deep shadows in your own settings only puts you at a disadvantage, so you have to crank your own gamma just to be able to compete on the same level.

    It's a sad reality, but it's not one that's likely to be changeable any time soon.
