Picmip Not Working For Me

I've tried changed my picmip setting (detail of textures), but it doesn't seem to be working. The guide posted on here says the command is r_picmip then the number, however it doesn't work at all. I added the line to my autoexe and nothing I can crank the number to like 5 and I see absolutely no change. I know my other lines are working because you can test in game by bringing up the console and typing the setting you modified and it displays the number, but whenever I try r_picmip it says unknown command..

what makes me wonder is that a little while ago, I was running r_picmip and there was no problem but now it just gives me an unknown command error. Anyone know if I'm doing something wrong, command changed or something?
