Does And Don't

Carve, Skew, rotate, arches, etc...
Okay, so I've been reading alot about mapping and I've been working on my own map for the past 3 weeks.

There are a few things that still confuse me.

1st of all. Wich tools can one use. An exemple of what I mean:

Carve. This wonderfull tool can create bad brushes. So, I don't use it.

Hammer isn't the brightess 3d editing software, hence I'm scared of using other functions.

Skew seems fun enough, but I'm worried hammer won't do it's job properly and I'll have either bad brushes (this doesn't mean unusable brushes, but simply not optimised...) or I'll have to retouch it by hand.
Rotate is another good exemple of a tool I don't use. Except for 90 degree rotations. I won't even use 45 degre, I'm too scared.

Then we have tools like arches and spheres. When I used the sphere brush, I had to edit my circle to make it ... better....

Another thing I'm wondering, is it really the end of the world if my brushes have dimensions that are not a multiple of 8.
Also, do func_walls block light. I'm guessing no. I know there's a way to do it with the ZHLT compile tools. When editing my entities properties, I can select between various "Lights flag" (normal, embedded fix, opaque, etc..). I searched for these properties but I didn't find anything.

I know these may be obvious to some of you. But believe it or not, they really do puzzle me. And yes, I do use the search function, as well as google, and I even use tutorial and mapping information sites (like valv-erc, etc...). Most of the times I can't find what I'm looking for though

Anyways, any information is greatly appreciated.

    i just compiled a map where i used carve, skew and hammer...

    hammer is small: yeah, it is, but it gets the job done... that's what counts.

    skew: i might be wrong, but i think it's fine

    carve: i know it isn't the best, but i've had good results with it... just can't use it too many times on the same brush.

    Carve = bad.
    Skew = fine.
    Rotate = usually fine.

    Set the lightflag to opaque to make the entity block light.

    carve is actually fine, if u spend a little time after just cleaning up whats its done (vertex manipulation) thats how i generally make curves, carve using a cylinder, then clean it up
