Ive been messing around with Audacity lately, but the best one i can think of is Adobe Audition, you can get a free trial, but it costs like 300 for the real thing.

i use sound recorder, digital orchestrator...

orchestrator is AWSOME, but has a high price tag and learning curve.

don't mention warez in these forums... not only did i pay the ~ $800 for orchestrator... i would be willing to pay for it AGAIN.

GoldWave is a great sound editor. There is a command limit of $1.50 per session ($0.01 per command) but besides that, its basically an infinite trial. Ive used it for alot, including this, a sound commisioned for a map.

i have a box, a manual, a reciept, and a nice program... i'de say that's enough proff i paid for it. (my dad needed it for work, so work paid for it, but still, it's our copy.)

Post pics of these alleged "receipts" and "boxes", next to today's newspaper.

GoldWave: General editing.
Audacity: Lots of plug-ins for reverb, special effects, etc.
Zero-X: Good tool for making looping wavs.
TotalRecorder: Grabs audio straight from your sound driver.
Sound Recorder: Still a good tool for changing formats.

Feels kinda weird giving away all my secrets. Still, I find the above proggies very helpful.
