Hurray, my internet conviently went out as I finished the first message, so here I am, rewriting it. Here goes...

Today, I popped opon my half life cd, installed that, downloaded and installed Steam, then downloaded and installed all the ns patches, 3.0 beta, 3.0 beta 4, beta 4a in the correct order. I then proceeded to activate steam, found NS in the game menu, double clicked it, and ran it. Unfortunatly, I could not connect to any servers, getting either/or of these errors. The client dll, and map not found or something. So I go here, check out the forums for some help. I find this

1) Install Steam.

2) Play HL atleast Once via Steam (just booting up the training mission will do).

3) Download these 3 files:
ns_install_v3_b1.exe
ns_v30_b4_patch.exe
ns_v30_b4a_patch.exe

4) Install NS V3.0 Beta 1 (ns_install_v3_b1.exe) (This should auto install to steam\steamApps\your@email\half-life\nsp, if it does not, move the NSP folder there).

5) Install NS V3.0 Beta 4 (ns_v30_b4_patch.exe) (point this at steam\steamApps\your@email\Half-Life\ do NOT include the NSP).

6) Install NS V3.0 Beta 4a (ns_v30_b4a_patch.exe) (See * at bottom).

7) Search your Hard drive(s) for folders named nsp.

8) If you have more than one you messed up. Goto Step 3.

If you folow these steps properly you will not get client.dll or map.bsp errors.

If you are positive you have folowed them corectly then redownload the installer form a different location.

*There aslo seems to be a bug with, atleast some of, the 4a installers. Try pointing it at steamApps\your@email\ instead of steamApps\your@email\half-life

Note: This is a file stored on my desktop because I have to use it so many times.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I delete steam and all the patches to start from a clean slate. I follow the directions exactly, changing my inslattions thingies. (btw I realize I failed to run half life before installing ns during the first attempt at the top). In addition, I implement changes in installation paths as seen in steps 4,5,6. I do all that, and still I have no luck. Infact, I am worse off, because now I cannot even see NS in the game menu.

So I try to run step 7, and to my horror, I find I have 2 folders of nsp. This is strange though. I am positive I have followed the above insturctions precisely. Can somebody help? <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

just move the other nsp directory under half life
  • DantemssDantemss Join Date: 2003-12-13 Member: 24305Members
The best way to do it is to check for the double folder each patch you apply. The nsp folder should be inside the steamapps/e-mail/half-life folder. If you got the file from Jarhedz or other known mirror, the default path should do.

yah, Dante got it in 1.

you can just delete all the NSP folder if ytou want, then install one at a time.

Check each time and then move your NSP folder to:
    steam\steamApps\your@Email\half-Life\nsp

    good luck <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

oh, and thank you for showing not only some slight form of intelegence, but alot of it actualy!

oh, and aas another warning, b/c steam has issues with uninstalling.....

if you changed your path for steam on the second install, the installer might try and creat the path for the first install. If this happens, just move the nsp folder and dell the rest of that path <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I have carefully read each post, but I am still having trouble. So this is what I'll do. I will post exactly what I am doing when I install each patch (to where it goes and everything)

    1) I delete all nsp files to start anew.

    2) Doubleclick and install patch 3.0 beta1 to ---- D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\rappinphil@yahoo.com\Half-Life\nsp---
(note, there is <i>another</i> nsp folder nested in this, which contains yet more ns stuff --- D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\rappinphil@yahoo.com\Half-Life\nsp\nsp --- is this right?)

    3) Doubleclick and install 3.0 beta 4 to --- D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\rappinphil@yahoo.com\Half-Life\nsp

    4) Doubleclick and install beta 4a to --- D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\rappinphil@yahoo.com\Half-Life\nsp

All of these files were taken from Jarhedz

Btw, I have several nsp folders. I dont understand why this is a problem, as beta 3.0 puts 1 in and so does beta 4.0

    Thanks for the responses, they are encouraging <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo-->

For some reason, I still have several nsp folders. I will again right down everything I do to see what I'm doing wrong.

    1) 3.0 beta 1 is automatiically installed to the correct path (steam\steamApps\your@email\half-life\nsp)

I now have an nsp folder.

    2) Now, I open up beta 4.0 and install it in the path you provided (D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\rappinphil@yahoo.com\Half-Life\)

But wait, I now do a precautionary search and find I have <b>2</b> nsp folders.

    1 is located here (D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\rappinphil@yahoo.com\Half-Life\nsp), from step 1.

#2 is located here (D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\rappinphil@yahoo.com\nsp) from step 2. I did not include the \nsp, and therefore it is right next to my Half-Life folder (in myemail@.com)

step 3 brings me no nsp folder, thankfully. But no ns in the steam game menu. So, where am I going wrong?

are you sure you are pointing the beta 4 patch at
    D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\rappinphil@yahoo.com\Half-Life\ ?

oh well, all you need to do is move the second nsp folder (D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\rappinphil@yahoo.com\nsp) to the originalk, letting it over write all files.

then install the 4a patch, and if it creates another nsp folde,r do the same thing.

Ok, I think I am getting a little closer. I installed it the way you said to. I now only have 1 large nsp folder (283mb) which gives proof that I have installed everything into the same folder. But still, ns does not show up under the steam game menu. Is there something else I should do?

Did you turn steam off before doing this?

search your hdd for steamapps (let it run the full search) and tell me if it finds more than one.

also, did you change your email addy?

    Steam was turned off.

    I found a folder called SteamApps located in D:\Program Files\Steam and a "VDF" file called SteamAppData.vdf in D:\Program Files\Steam\config

    Did not change email adress.

This is so strange though, because the very first time I installed ns it, it showed up in the game menu, but now, nadda.

    hmmm

and that one NSP folder is:
    D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\your@email\nsp

and it still doesn't show up in your 3rd party games list?
try going to the servers window and setting the filter to Natural Selection...
  • RappinPhilRappinPhil Join Date: 2004-06-09 Member: 29213Members
Yes, double clicking on the nsp folder brings this to the top of the adress bar ---D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\rappinphil@yahoo.com\Half-Life\nsp---

It would not let me select any game other than Hallife at the setting filter, that being the only on I have thats highlighted on the game menu.

    Maybe something else is amiss.
    Clicking on...
SteamApps>I now have 2 folders and 3 gcf files. the 2 folders are rappinphil and rappinphil@yahoo.com Clicking on the latter, it brings me to Halflife> and there is my nsp folder. there are two other icons here, unins000 -some sort of media file-, and inno setup uninstaller, named unins000 with a recylce bin icon.

Another thought. During my very first installtion, when I didnt mess with anything and didnt change any paths, ns showed up on the game menu. Of course, I would get the client or map error when I tried to join a game, but it showed up nonetheless...

So, what is it that I am doing differently now then what I did the first time I installed ns?

    Besides that, any suggestions?

the fact that you have 2 folders in your Steamapps dir says something is wrong.

    remove the RappinPhil folder.

    remove the NSP folder.
reinstall from scratch, search your HDD after each step for nsp.

each time you should only fin one folder, and it should be:

    D:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\rappinphil@yahoo.com\Half-Life\nsp

if you end up with a folder that is not there, either try mooving it, or deleating it and reinstalling the last patch.

The rappinphil folder keeps coming back after I delete it.

Anyways, I deleted Steam and all the ns files. Reinstalled steam and the ns files, and still nothing.

I got lazy for a bit. I just did one now...came up with 1 nsp folder, right where it should be.
