There are not one but <b>two</b> settings in the HL engine relating to brightness: the <i>gamma</i> setting, which is very well-known amongst nearly everybody, and the <i>brightness</i> setting, which I only discovered recently.
You've probably noticed that setting <i>gamma</i> too high will wash out pretty much every colour. The <i>brightness</i> setting, in combination with a smaller <i>gamma</i> increase, will make it easier to see without turning your display into a whitewash.
On my system, I use:
<b><i>gamma 2.5
brightness 2</i></b>
and it looks great.
