The growth of rts/fps games.

Anyone else notice a lot of new games and mods have cropped up bearing the same gameplay concept as NS?  The whole combination of RTS and FPS isn't a new thing, it really started with Uprising and Battlezone.  I think it was Battlezone 2 that really pioneered using a traditional overhead commander's map to command an FPS battlefield.  Even though BZ2 wasn't that successful, I still have many good memories of commanding teammates on the field (and listening to them whine after their ship was blown up after not heeding my warnings)

I've noticed a few mods already on the bandwagon, but this game really interests me:
Savage

Same concept, just different setting.  Looks interesting enough that I'd buy it.

Frankly I like the new RTS/FPS style, as it gives a great deal of depth to a previously chaotic "teamplay FPS" genre.  Even a strategic teamplay only game like C&C: Renegade was devoid of real teamwork or strategy, which really brought down the game.

    I've always wanted an rts/fps ever since playing through the marine campaign in starcraft...
    I always pictured a massivly multiplayer one first.(since you usually don't have just 20 units total in a game of SC <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo--> )

    Looks like NS is going to do this just right and I hear its acctually better with a slightly lower playercount (around 16)

    Its really rather ironic that this should be called Natural Selection, an idea based on evoulution. In many a way, while this game is not the first, its the first that will survive and grow. Much like the first birds probally died out until the best design came along. Its the very concept of evoultion, given its in the video game sense rather than the living sense. Just look at the growth of games over the past 10 years. I honestly beleive that games are heading towards hybrids of what we play now. Towards more of a social collectiveness than before. If you look at all the MMORPGs that are out you can spot it. People want to play together, but they are getting sick of the same idea over and over. The action games want action, and the strategy gamers want strategy. But the MMORPG want the social enviroment. But Natural Selection may be just what the game industry needs right now to get it going into new directions. Its the new evoultion in my beleif. Not to make a big deal out of anything, but I really beleive NS is going to have a more profound impact than many may realize.

    Welcome everyone, to evolution.

    I'm amazed we haven't seen more of the 3D RTS's. They've been limited to the N64 version of C&C rather than letting you choose from commander view to unit view.

    I think Natural Selection is a great addition to the evolution ( o.O ) of 3D RTS.

    However, I'd still give NS 10/10 in Originality. It's not just any 3D RTS.
