It just won't. go. away
recently, i've been getting random adware popups, and i know they're adware because they happen everywhere, even here.
I've scanned with Ad-aware, Spybot Search and destroy. Twice each, and niether of them picked up the problem.
And don't answer 'Get Firefox/mozilla/opera/a life' i wan't to get rid of it, not hide it and hope it goes away

Did you update each program before you ran your scans? That's a critical step.

You sure you have spybot 1.3?
I had Spybot 1.2 and that never seemed to update because 1.3 is out so the update feature on 1.2 doesn't work anymore.

Apart from that what are the pop-ups for? If they're about being awarded a new polyphonic ringtone then i had the same problem, neither ad-aware or spybot detects them yet. If it is let me know and I'll tell you you need to remove.

Also try a virus scan with housecall online and have it check in your windows and documents and settings folders. (If you want to be quick, otherwise do the whole disk.)

    i have spybot 1.2 :/
when i scanned with ad-aware, after updating, it started detecting registry VALUES, ot's ever picked up any of them before, only registry keys
it's also taking a lot longer to scan

    see whats running with msconfig...

I had one bastard worm the other day called wuam.exe which had written itself all over my reg, so i had to go through all that

if you spot anything dubious, just untick and write it out of the reg if its in there...

Well make sure you get spybot 1.3, theres been a few updates for it, so that may help.
    Clicky here
The new spybot also has alot more immunisations, about 400+, so run that. It also has a much better on startup checker thing. So thats also good.

Try running Hijackthis and look through the logs it gives. It give a very through account of the stuff that happens when windows starts up and what attaches its self to IE. Making it very useful. Check through them and see if anything unusual turns up. Post the logs on here if you want and I'll see if i can help.

Popup and addware problems, do the following for t3h win

    Phase 1
Download Spybot S&D. Once you have and have installed it run the update and download all updates, then click the immunize button. Then a check will happen usually teling you to immunize. Click ok then click the immunize button at the top. Then click the lovly button that says "Enable peranet blocking of all bad webpages in internet explorer" and select black pages silently from the combo box. Finally check for problems from the search and destroy tab on the left and fix everything
    Close the program

    Phase 2
Download Spyware Blaster and install. First check for updates for the program on the update tag. Once done click the protection tab and simply click enable all protection. You done, close the app.

    Phase 3a
Download Google Toolbar and install. This provides. the best popup stopper about for internet explorer.

    Phase 3b
Failing that download Mozilla Firefox. Its an alternative web browser that is very very good with built in popup protection.

    The Final Result
You now have a pc which:

Blocks 99% of popups

Blocks 80%+ of adverts and banners

Is defended againts allsorts of nasty stuff

Doesn't get filled with annoying crap so quick

Will likly run faster because of less annoying crap

Is more secure

This has been the most useful post i have EVER made, dont knock it
