It's that time again folks.
Hello, me again. Now if any of you old forumers remember, I had a thread back asking how to lose weight effectively....needless to say, I lost track of it.

But that's not it, because instead of just this problem, I have been plagued by 2 more problems to add to it. Oh joy.

First off....

-Weight problem
Now I'm not exactly your fat person type, but I'm not necessarily your fit type either.I am borderline overweight, and I need to get some weight off. It doesn't matter how long, because I have almost all the time I need in life.

I just need some exercises than can be done at home, are pretty effective at losing the excess weight, and not involve water (prohibited by parents, pretty lame huh?)

EDIT : I failed to mention that I also wanted to gain a bit of height as well. Any sort of stretches you would recommend? ^_^;

I ish sorry for inconvenience caused by edit.

Now secondly....
-Study problems
Well, I'm pretty much your average joe type of person that doesn't have much fails, but here's the catch : I do NOT study. Ever. I need a suggestion on how to improve on study schedules. This is especially important because it's the exams already, and I'm midway through(don't worry, I don't fail easily....other than French and Math anyway)

And finally, the last problem....
Money problems
I don't know if it's just me, or I just end up spending money and wind up losing all of it, every single day. Do you guys have any tips on how to actually save money? I desperately need to learn to manage my money for a new video card and hard drive I want to get, but I just eat my way through money. Strangely enough, I also have this problem in PSO.

I always get HKD$25 a day for lunch money, but I wind up spending it all even if it's not a full day *coughexamscough* Hope that helps.

Aye, I desperately need help in these areas....maybe also mental management, but I can handle that anyways.

Ok, get some postet notes, wright small notes quotes etc on them and put them ALL over your room. You MUST read them in order to go past them/use the object.

Seems to work well for me.

    weight:

i dont know what you had in mind, but this isnt just for fatties, or overweighties.. its for everyone who isnt exactly fit and wants to do something about it

    not an extreme work out:

every night before you go to bed [or during, dont skip it or you're screwed]

    do 50 situps

    do 20 [or more] pushups

50 pushups what i do is... 15 normal [or until i get tired [then i do 5 more so im pushing it]], then slight rest [still gotta be tired from 15 though, so youre breaking the pain barriers] then 10 diagonal to the left, then pause, then 10 to the right, then pause, then another 15 at LEAST, then as many as you can before you crash onto your back and fall straight into sleep ive only been doing this the past few nights but im gonna keep doing it and its gonna be good. push ups i havent been doing any, but thats because my bed times are screwed =\ i gotta do em before i go to bed, sigh

    money:

you get $25 hong kong money or whatever.. well every day take only 10 to school, and leave 15 in a safe place that you CANNOT take money out of. then instead of buying food from fast food places / canteen, go to woolworths [or any supermarket] and buy some bread etc.. then just make sandwiches

    duhhh

Its very hard ot get fit as I was a top athlete for a while and was very thin then had some problems and got over weight then I used my weight to an advantage by going to the gym. Now the first few days of gym are hard but if you push your self the gym just feels like a everyday task.

Uh I would suggest getting your priorities on a list, like put them on paper.

    For the overweight problem:
    -Eat healthy stuff
-Try to get enough movement, do some sport every day or jog around the block

    About the studying problem:
Well if you seem never to study, and still get good grades I can say you're pretty smart and have a good memory, since you keep everything in memory at the lessons.
Well if you just made some time every day, and just read the stuff you're having at school at the moment, you will learn better.

    About the money problem:

-Just say to yourself, Do I really need this?
With needing I mean, can I go without it?
Like candy, Its nice to have and eat, but you can go without, just eat some more regular food if you're getting hungry.
And the money you save you should put in on the bank (if it is much) or just save it up, and at the end of the week you can deposit it.

Uhh just my 2c, I hope it made any sense..

As for the weight, eediot has the right idea. Simple yet very reptetive.. it won't build muscle like actually lifting weights would, but it will slim down that extra chub you may have.

As for myself, before I go to bed I always do 100 or more situps. After those starting being easy by 500 or so, you can always grab a bag and hold on to next to your chest and do the situps that way, (fill the backpack with books/weight medium) I am currently up to 45lbs.. and I can only manage around 150 before my stomach hurts too much to continue. Push-ups are very good for creating defined muscles in the back/triceps. I am assuming you have a little extra fat in the biceps as well, as for that I would take a two-liter bottle of pop/soda/whatever, and use that like you would curls. Don't do them fast, for you want definition not ease. So... do them really really slow, after about 30 or so you will feel a slight burn in your arm, just keep going till you can't do them anymore.(edit) Oh yes.. always watch what you eat as well, for that can make all the differnce in the world, one of my co-workers here is signifigantly overweight (6 2, and 375 is not muscle) He has thus far lost over 50 pounds just by changing his eating habits and watching what he eats. (Thanks to Zaggy for reminding me of that)

As for studying... I am not very good with that, I never did either. Heh, sorry I can't be of more help there.

Money issues.. eediot is on the right track there, go and open a savings account at any bank and tell them to suspend all transactions for a set amount of time, then when you have money take half of it and put it in the account, eventually you will learn to live on less money and won't need to worry about them anymore. I did that when I was having some excessive spending a few years ago. It has worked thus far, that account is fairly fat now and I still can't touch it for 2 more years, even though I continually put at least 30% of my paycheck auto-deposited in it.

Hope that helps, and if you need more detailed information or anything, I am always available to PM, after all helping people is fun.

[Take from this what you believe... this is to an extent my life - training to reach peak physical condition and maintaining it... bits will work, bits won't work - every one is different, so you have to find what works for you!]

Firstly, saying "do 10 million pushups a night" won't lose weight - pushups and situps are muscle-building exercises - they are not CardioVascular exercise (they don't burn fat)

Not to say they don't have their place - but for losing weight, they will not help.

To lose weight, there are essentially 3 factors: Head, Diet, Exercise - in that order in my opinion.

Head: If you don't have the right attitude towards weight loss, you won't lose weight. It is not easy, and it isn't an overnight job - it is a long term commitment that takes a lot of will power for the average person. If you are serious about losing weight, you are a third of the way there.

Diet: Diet is more important than exercise - you could go to the gym for 10 hours a day and lift all the weights in the world, but if you don't eat properly, you'll get no progress. you could run a marathon once a week, but if you don't eat properly, you'll get no progress.

This again, comes down to how serious you are about this:
Not extremely: Eat 4-5 meals a day - for breakfast, you want balance, not volume - a glass of water, a glass of orange juice and a bowl of ceral - a REAL cereal like Oatmeal or Muesly, not cornflakes or some thing like that. Lunch - smaller than you're used to - a couple of sandwitches and a glass of water / orange juice. supper - MUCH smaller - about half the size you usually have - if you like a cooked meal, cook the whole thing, eat half for supper (at say, 5:30pm) and then the other half later in the evening (about 8:30pm for example)
by splitting it up into smaller meals, you keep your metabolism higher resulting in greater fat burnage.

Very serious: Count the calories. Depending on your age / sex / height / weight and % body fat - these all determine what your daily calory intake should be. you work out what that should be, take into account days when you do exercise, then work out an eating plan that totals the calories to about 200 below your requirement - much lower than this and your body turns catabolic and starts breaking down muscles for energy - a bad thing....

Exercise: A 20 minute brisk walk is more effective for weight loss than a 7 minute run. Burning fat is a slow process - is you work your body intensely for a short period of time, it needs a high energy source - after the first 5 or so minutes the creatine/atp/glucse in the muscles has all been used, so it starts to turn to other sources - one of the early ones is muscle tissue. less intense exercise maintained over a longer period of time (thats important... you have to work for longer) will result in fat loss at a much greater rate.

So: you can do things such as go for long gentle jogs. ideally swimming (although you said no water involved?), bike rides, rowing (v. good)

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Study: not my area... I've been told it's good to work out some sort of time table..?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Money: if you can't do it yourself, get your parents to do it - tell them of the $25 they give you, put $7.50 in a bank account for you and in 6 months give you access to the money... if you can do it yourself, as people have already said - for every bit you get given, save a little and don't let yourself use it

Another thing you'll notice is when you eat healthily, your food bills drop dramatically - 'healthy' food is far cheaper than junk stuff - a lunch at McDonalds here (in england) costs about ?4.50 .. i get a far more nutritious (and better tasting in my opinion) from Boots Chemists as a Meal Deal for ?2.50 - 2 big sandwitches, an apple juice and a cereal bar. sweet deal

hope this some use - feel free to pm me if you want more details on the calory counting... i left it out cause this is already too long!

    [Edit] - About height...

there are no 'stretches' as such to increase height - you grow fastest when you are lieing down (ie asleep) but there is a height you will grow to as determined by your DNA, and all the sleep in the world won't cause you to grow any more

    i think i'm a tad overweight, weighing in at 70Kg(although i'm 195cm/6ft 4in)
50 situps good, 100 situps better(don't overdo this one, push yourself too hard and you'll be hurting for days)
This helps make your stomach look less 'chubby'(well it works for me)

Also, if you're the type of person who eats snacks a lot, try resisting the urge to go and get food, it sure will help.

    hmm..

you say you wanna work out at home, but you also say you've got a lot of time..

would you be able to do biking?

it's SO easy and very fun and you lose weight before you know it, really.

a lot of people i know lost plenty of weight that way and say they really barely felt it.

I've been doing something similiar for a little under a month now. I started off doing 100 situps and 80 or so pushups a night. Numbes have increased a little, and some results are starting to show.

But if you really want to trim up some, running, or long walks is another great place to start. I run occasionally, but usually don't find the time for it.

Just a note: If your parents restrict your water usage, it's going to be very dangerous for you to exercise a lot. You need water. Why do they restrict it?
  • Cold_NiTeCold_NiTe Join Date: 2003-09-15 Member: 20875Members
Do you HAVE to do these exercises at home? It would be much easier if you could go jogging or biking outdoors. That makes it more fun and less like work.

When you buy water by the bottle you'll understand. Although he could mean restricted as in, no swimming :/

With regards to your money problems, change your spending habits - leaving money at home helps (even just coins, a friend of mine used to save money by only spending notes and putting all his coins in a jar, worked really well for him)

The hardest part of saving money is sticking at it long enough - if you save $5/day after a couple months you've got a couple hundred etc. I found eating at different places (eg: local restaurants instead of fast-food places like KFC/McDonalds) was much cheaper and when I cut down on the snack food (everytime I go to the supermarket for some water I come back with a couple bags of junk food, it gets expensive pretty quickly)

Getting parents to save money for you won't do you any good in the long run, you gotta learn good habits while you're young, so they stay with your for life.

edit: Walking is an good form of excercise, I used to do it a lot back home in Australia (I do it a bit here too sometimes but the constant high temperatures drain me of energy since I'm not used to them yet)

No matter the price, water is something you should not deny your body, ever.

Well, ever since I almost drowned because of my brother keeping me under the water, I've been kept away from water....and never ever saw water again(except for drinking and showers, and school because of the sea....horrid view btw, full of cargo ships)

I might be considering leaving some of my money in the drawer next time for savings, since I don't really have a bank account (my mom is a nazi when it comes to money,so no bank account because "robbers will steal it")

I also enjoy walking a lot, so I really might consider that (I once walked like 10 districts straight, and in Hong Kong 10 districts take about 5 hours to walk, perfect for me )

Anyways, I appreciate all the feedback I've received. Sadly, not enough for studies, but that's ok. I'm pretty much doing ok for now....but tomorrow I got Math.....I was always horrid at Math

For losing weight, try to plan your day like this:

Morning - Eat a nice, big breakfast. Healthy foods, no processed foods. After that, go for a jog or a walk. Just walking and jogging.

Noon - Eat an average-sized lunch. More healthy foods, nothing processed. Run again for an hour or two.

Dinner - Eat a tiny dinner. I mean, small. Maybe a sandwich and a glass of water or something. After that, do some exercises. If you're up to it, go for a walk.

Make sure that you drink lots of water. At LEAST 7 or 8 glasses a day. Cut back on sodas and sugary drinks.
