Crash Upon Server Join

Sounds loops in background
I'm having a crash problem whenever I try to join a game of NS. Loading up the menu screen and then choosing a server works flawlessly. NS connects to the server fine, but as soon as I get in, I hit the crash. I see the readyroom through the eyes of my player, but the first half second or so of the ambience sound loops over and over in the background. The screen gamma also darkens slightly after 1 second or so of the crash. I can't move at all, and it requires a reset to clear.

Other details:

- AMD 1.8 Ghz
- Using SoundBlaster Live and Geforce 2 MX with 512 Megs of Ram
- Windows 98
- Running OpenGL in 1024 x 768
- Using the Half life retail client
- I'm using a clean install of Steam with nothing but half life and Ns on it.
- I've run through the half life training course without problems
- I installed ns v3.0 b1, then b4, and then b4a all in the correct order. I've also redownloaded all of the installers to make sure none are corrupt.

I've never had this problem before, but I've been forced to reinstall steam recently, and that is when the problem began. Any help would be appreciated.

I would pin this either on soundcard drivers or GFX card drivers since you have a new install of HL it cannot be that,

I would try updating drivers for both and seeing if it helps.
