The HL1 that we got is actually Half-Life 2, because the difference between HL1 after the delay and before was so significant and tremendous.
Anyone remember the old old old old screenshots of HL1? There was a picture of Gordon on what looked like to be Sin's engine, and it was the most screwed up picture ever. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> When Valve delayed HL1 they scrapped it almost completely and started over.
Also, I think your memory is a bit fuzzy, because HL and SiN came out within a few months of each other, and SiN's engine was quite up to the challenge. When those two came out they were both the best looking games around anywhere, clearly a leap beyond Quake 2.
In fact, due to HL1's buggy-ness and its asstacular multiplayer (I'm talking before ANY patches came out) it was predicted that SiN would be the multiplayer successor to Quake 2. But luckily or unluckily (depending on how you look at it), Valve buckled down and released a slew of patches while Ritual was a little slow w/ the fixing of SiN's issues. A few months later nobody is playing SiN anymore and Valve finally tries to make people less **** off about TF2 not being a free addon and releases TFC...
But.. but... <a href='http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=1998-11-18' target='_blank'>it was already on my clipboard</a>! Also its the first Penny Arcade comic EVER!

I myself don't care when it comes out, nor did I know what happened to HL1 when I first started defending VALVe- many have lost faith purely because they feel that game devs have to live up to certain expectations. When it comes down to it, they do- to make good games. But if they get delayed, it isn't a part of those expectations.
Give it time- this final tweaking means we'll have the best gaming experience ever coupled with the greatest mod engine ever to produce even better experiences.
