OHNOES!
Me and a few friends are looking to put in for a pair of 'community' pets that we'll all have access to, and currently we're looking at a pair of sugar gliders
My question is, do we have any forumites with experience on these creatures, or tips for raising them? We plan on getting two of them (either both male or both female, god help us should they breed) because we heard they're communal creatures that could actually DIE if they become too lonely and depressed.
We think to try and save some money initially we'll build a cage for them ourselves, go to home depo and get some chicken coop wiring or some such thing and put together a cage with a big enough height that they'll have plenty of room for climbing little objects like ropes and the sides of the cages, or maybe gliding down if the mood suits them.
I think what concerns me the most though is their diet, not sure what I would be looking at cost-wise, or even WHAT I'm getting them to eat. At the pet store the mother (who's about to give birth to my future pets) just had a bowl with some random fruits and orange peels in it, but the cage was tiny, reminding me why I hate some pet stores :\
But anyways...
SUGAR GLIDER!

Just do me one favor before rushing off and buying a pet: read anything you can find on them. The more you know, the better for both you and your pet.
they needed some special type of cage with some powder on it... i dont remember what it was.
and i had to put down flat surfaces in the cage because of the risk of them getting "bumblefoot" or something liek that.
my advice is, like dragon_mech said, learn all you can about them
Been doing some extensive reading, should go well. I plan to put up pics when all is said and done =)

*edit* WARNING: They are EXTREMELY ILL-TEMPERED DO NOT PICK UP IF ALLERGIC TO SPIDER BITES
And so um... do they actually glide anywhere given the chance, or is it just a catchy name to sound cool?
And they sound pretty high maintanence too...
get a ferret, it cleans your fingers for you.
LMFAO
Don't leave any doors or windows open ...
Also, avoid leaving the oven open, or something else hot like a fireplace or microwave. Someone might be making a snack, and not realize its in there.
Hence "Sugar Glider". Sounds and looks real cute though. If you can get some roomy accommodations for them and think you've got enough background knowledge (and time! Remember that pets need time!), why not?
