I've heard that the more hives you have, the more damage your carapace will absorb? If that's true, how much per hive?

Also, are there any other evolutions affected by the number of hives?

    Its not carpace, its the shield in general for all life forms.
    its in some beta changelog.
    It was included to stop the "its all about resnodes" gameplay, and make hives good for skulks.
    As I can remember it goes like 8% 12% 16%

    By carapace, I'm referring to how much damage your remaining armor absorbs. Or is that not the case?

    Nah, all kharaa have armour, dunno what it is, its just generic armour. Carapace is the upgrade that enables you to have EXTRA armour, on top of the generic stuff. More total armour per hive, % as above (if thats right).

    wait, are you implying a hive1 skulk with 70/10 has more armour than a hive3 skulk with 70/10?

    sorry, I meant to put hive3 first.
    Wonder why such a radical change wouldnt be one of the first things to be mentioned in the changelog (cuz I never saw it...)

    WITH CARAPACE you have MORE armour PER HIVE.
    ie
    1 Hive = extra 8%
    2 Hives = extra 12%
    3 Hives = extra 16%

    Warning, may not be accurate.

    Yes, and no. Carapace is a Defence upgrade, that adds additional Armor Points and Armor Absorption on top of the base lifeform Armor.

    The additional hives effect ups the amount of Armor Apsorption on the base lifeform armor. Getting the Carapace upgrade is not necessary to take advantage of this. I'm not sure of the actual percentanges.

    for everyone's clarification:

    with one hive: each point of armor absorbs 2 points of damage.
    70% of the damage taken goes to armor, 30% to health

    with two hives: each point of armor absorbs 2.5 points of damage.
    80% of the damage taken goes to armor, 20% to health.

    with three hives: each point of armor absorbs 3 points of damage.
    90% of the damage taken goes to armor, 10% to health.

    Carapace doesn't change those values as far as I know, but its effectiveness increases with more hives because of the increase in the amount of damage armor absorbs. Since each point of armor is more valuable with more hives, carapace's armor increase becomes more valuable. Imagine carapace adding 100 armor; at hive 1, that absorbs 200 damage, but at hive 3 it absorbs 300. Also, at hive 3 armor is the most important aspect of the alien's longevity since they don't take a significant amount of health damage until it's gone. Can anyone confirm whether or not carapace actually increases absorption in addition to the armor increase?

    This is true. Because on a custom map i play if you have 4 or more hives, you actually gain health from taking damage. As long as you have armour left your health will go up with every bullet taken.

    It's a way to balance higher lifeforms for Combat. In combat, aliens are always at Hive 1 armor.
