First, you need to know what type of CPU you're going to be running.

All other decisions derive from that.

Okay, is it an original K7 (Slot A) or a more recent model (Socket A)? For the former, I still have my K7V and it's still chugging along just fine. For the latter, I had an A7V8X... but the A7V600 is out now and it uses an updated chipset.

Er... all of the above are from ASUS. Great motherboards, can't recommend them highly enough for stability and overclockability, if you're into that.

... You still haven't told us which model of CPU you've got.

When in doubt, go for the A7V600. Avoid the nForce chipsets. They've been known to fry RAM in the past.

That one is a pentium 4 motherboard... Not compatible with AMD Athlons...

Actually, the nForce2 has been known to do it as well. I don't trust it, speed or stability. If I put my components in and tweak 'em, I want them to stay tweaked... not spontaneously become a puddle of sizzling silicon because of some jackass at nVidia not making sure the fault tolerances wouldn't fry out the machine.

Intel and AMD are ~same and it is a question of personal taste and interest. Intel is best at proffecional tasks like image/video editing. Game performance is great on both systems.

I'm off to bed before I get brutally honest. Well, okay. Maybe a little first.

George, you'll want to look for a 'Socket A' motherboard. I've given you model names. Here is a link to the ASUS website, giving an overview of the board. A7V600

The Audigy line, regardless of what people who have paid too much may tell you, is simply a SoundBlaster Live with a new sticker slapped on. They'll defend to the death that they're not, but it's really because they could get the same damn hardware for $30 (SBLive Value) that they paid $120 (Audigy whatever) for. And don't want to feel like idiots.

Also note that most of these people won't even be using REAL 5.1 sound.
