Crippling Video Bug, Plz Help!

*cries a river*
So NS looks like crap on D3D for me, and I put it on OpenGL.

Now most of the game is smooth as silk... but some maps murder my comp.

Certain hives or areas drop my FPS from about 90 to literally 2 or 3. The sound gets choppy. Basically, I become bait. You can imagine how this affects my aim or even my ability to notice an enemy standing in front of me.

WHAT FIXES THIS? Is there a way at all? Is it just the maps? Or am I just stuck with D3D forever?

    It's a modest HP. 254 mb, 1793 hertz. I think we've got a 16mb video card in there.

It runs games like AvP2 smoothly, why not good 'ol Half Life?

Gah, ATI cards and Vsync off in half-life... bad combo. VERY BAD. Lets hope he has an old nvidia.

I'd have to disagree with the vsync off comment. That just makes it look cruddy if your framerate goes above your refresh rate.

A better video card would probably be a sound investment, given that 16MB cards were around the TNT or TNT2 era. Hiverooms (and Marine Spawn) tend to be built in a lot. All those extra structures are additional polys, which could quite likely be killing a slower card.

I'd the same sort of problems - the only thing I changed was using a 64mb card, and now it all runs smoothly.

And yes, I could play AvP2 perfectly with my old onboard card. Personally I blame Steam, as "normal" HL runs perfectly. Go figure.

A 1.8 gHz CPU is plenty for most games, but that vid card is really holding you back. I mean like a ball and chain type holding you back. You could get a lot more out of your computer if you buy an $80 card.

You could probably even get a card significantly better than what you have now for free. People throw that stuff away, particularly businesses, or that friend of yours who just spent $300-500 on a shiny top of the line card.

Speaking of investiment, you should try nVIDIA Ti series -they should fit well to you machine. XP1800 + 512 MB + Ti-4400 == Good for the next five years. There really isn't any reason to buy a brand new, top-line graphics card when they also require more processing power.

Also I would suggest getting more RAM, 512mb atleast.
