<div class="IPBDescription">AKA "Help crabby with parts selection"</div> Alright, After much thought, i know that i need to upgrade from the smoldering ashes of the Derelict (hmm... suddenly im thinking of renaming her Phoenix)
Anyway, i need a new motherboard, CPU, and ram, anu suggestions? The two frontrunners are:

Nforce2 Motherboard
+?
-or-

Processor: Athlon 64 3400+ Retail - $398
Cooling: Thermalright SLK-948U w/Vantec Stealth 92mm - $40
Motherboard: ASUS K8V Deluxe - $99
Memory: 2 X 512-MB Corsair TwinX XMS DDR400/PC3200LL - $304

any better suggestions?

(In case your wondering, i do prefer AMD. My Duron 733 still runs after 4 years and even after being OC'd to 1.001ghz. Product loyality is always good (as is the fact i own stock in AMD <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

Assuming you want to pay that amount of money, your parts look fine to me. Dunno if you really need the fancy Corsair RAM, but some people swear by it.

Nice setup (the second) But why cooling? Are you planning to overclock? What about harddisc?

Not really for home use unfortunatly, save your self some cash, go for a 32 bit system now (nothing too pricey) and then when 64 bit apps run ablaze, the 64 bit cpu costs will drop, and everybody wins =)
  • jumpingjodajumpingjoda Join Date: 2003-12-14 Member: 24367Members, Constellation, Reinforced - Shadow
The A64 is a 32/64 bit processor and is even under 32 bit faster then anny normal 32 bit proc.

But still, the price, you can buy something similar in the 32 bit only range for much less <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yes, or you can by something in the 64-bit range for much less.

    A nice comparison of a 2 GHz athlon XP and athlon 64: <a href='http://www.viperlair.com/reviews/cpu_mobo/amd/3200_64/' target='_blank'>here</a>

Especially take a look at game performance.

Allright, after much consideration, i have decided on this setup:

    CPU 2.2GHZ AMD ATHLON XP 3200+ 400MHZ 512k $202.19
    MOBO ASUS ATH/DUR SOCKET A NFORCE2 CHIPSET 400MHZ DDR AUDIO/LAN $74.67
RAM 256MB DDR PC3200 400MHZ KINGSTON $51.40 (between 1 and 3 sticks, depending on if i want to pawn my paintguns)
    So, what do you think?

That processor is horribly over priced... A 2.2 ghz with only 400 fsb for 200$?!
I picked up a 2.4 pentium 4 with 800 fsb that was able to overclock to 3.6 ghz for 125$

yeah I'm seeing that particular processor at about $170 in France, I think you can get a better price on it!

I think you need to check a few more reviews, do a few comparisons, even a low end athlon-64(such as the 3000+ or 2800+) beats the snot out of that processor for gaming IF the game is not limited by your graphics card.

When checking reviews, there's a few things you need to be aware of. When the CPU is being bottlenecked by the graphics card or something, you will see allmost the exact same results from all processors, when the reviewers where kind enough to include performance from nearly identical systems with other processors you will easily see this, but if you have to go check separate reviews you might not.

Games should be run in a very low resolution to benchmark the CPU, because CPU load will not decrease, but load on the graphics card is greatly reduced. In many newer games you will not see a difference between these processors at all because your graphics card is limiting you, but there is no sensible reason not to buy a processor that's better if the difference in cost is justifiable or even in your favour.

    sonofabitch!

Anyway, the chip, overpriced as it is, should be fine, im bottlenecked by my Gefroce4 Ti 4200 anyway. Plus, i got a big discount on it, total cost for all the parts: $360, better than what i payed for my Duron 733 4 years ago!

I finally got the parts! but i have a new, huge problem.
As it seems, Windows XP doenst like me swapping out 90% of the componets, so i had to reinstall. Finding my old reliable burn copy (I accually bought it, but i have the original in my backup archive, wich is cross town in case i have a fire). All went well until it had to reboot to finish the process. Old reliable had a nasty chip in the disk, it loaded fine so i thought it woul;d be ok. Boy, was i wrong, it would finish setup then reset! After ejecting Old Reliable and tossing it, i burned another backup and try repairing my mistake, no dice. It seems the instillation of the first disk did somthging to my system thast makes reinstillation iimpossible without reformatting. Im a second away from pulling ym c drive and loading up on my spare, but im wondering Is my data still ok? and has any6one had a simmilart problem? Thanks

You know it's better to have a fine balance with your components, having a super fast processor, with lots of fast ram, and a horribly ageing Ti4200? Sound's kinda silly to me with all the new games that are coming out to take advantage of these hot-rod video card's. I would somehow factor in a new video card into the equation to keep the system more outdated-proof. Try one of ATI's Radeon 9800 Pro, their getting pretty dirt cheap now, for a mere $229.00 bucks. (Pricing Via <a href='http://www.pcprogress.com/)' target='_blank'>http://www.pcprogress.com/</a>)

    Just a thought....

tempting, although the TI4200 is the most recent componety in the system, and i'm waiting for a sub 100 really good card (probably a Geforce 6).

UPDATE: System is currently formatting the new C drive

oh yeah, and she has 4 hard drives noe for a grand total of 340gb of space

  • Mr_HeadcrabMr_Headcrab Squee&#33;~ Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9392Members, Constellation
no, the update to the Video overrode the CPU update, and vice versa, giving me a glitch where if i tried to do ANYTHING it would rerstart. not even BSOD then restart, just restart out of the blue (could also be the old drivers for my MOBO, but that's impossible bewcaust i had to boot off a new HD to get it to start!) so now, the ZombieBox (Doenst get the name Derelict until it works again goddamnit!) is being a nice, 400 dollar Paperweight

Reformat is what I'd reccomend. Or perhaps your harddrive is about to kick the bucket, which is a strong possiblity.

yeah, that's the odd thing, the HDD is brand new.

after i installed XP, it rand fine, but then it started tghe ramdom crashes and now it wont5 boot at all, or even let me load iun the OS.

I need to find someone with 90 gigs of space so i can backup and then reformat my former C:\ drive (Now currently I:/)

Update, yes, an update to a 3 month old thread

I shall inform you of what has happened in the space of the past few months.

    1) the problem was a shoddy disk controller, i returned it at the end of AUGUST

    2) a month after no contact, they inform me i fogot an IDE cable, a case badge, and the instalattion CD. I mutter many obsenities and send it out on SEPT 20th

    3) after ZERO contact from them for a week, i call. they received it and will send me a replacment, finally i can sever all ties from the spawn of Satan. The guiy says the package will arrive NO LATER than Monday of next week.

    4) "Next Monday" came and went, im fuming and checking Priceline.com for airfare to their HQ and Cheaperthandirt.com for a surplus Sherman Tank. Rather than start an international incident (my Aim's so bad when im ****, i'd probably miss their Washington state HQ and hit Canada) I commmence "Operation: Rack-up-a-huge-bill-by-calling-their-1800-number-a-bajillion-times" I finally get to talk to a human being, although he sounded like he was making a quarter a day for his phone answering. He informs me that a large Goverment contract delayed my order, and he gave me a tracking number. the motherboard i ordered in the first two weeks of FRICKEN JULY will arrive Friday. Let's all hope this one accually WORKS.

Oh, and free Caek and Pai. For information why, look at the bottom of the forum main page.
